Sew a coat

First of all, I have barely no experience of sewing whatsoever. I want to have a red coat, but not a women model, so it's very hard to find. So, how hard is it to sew a coat? Is there something else I should try first, or don't you think that's necessary? How should I do to sew a coat? What material should I use?

Thanks in advance for all answers

I think it would depend on the design of the coat. I think clothes wise its best to start with a simple skirt, dress or t shirt type top and work your way up.

Collars can be particularly difficult. Plus you'd probably have to line it, which is also tricky, plus there is the problem of finishing the front of it.

You'd have to use a material suitable for the pattern, I usually ask when I buy the fabric.

A coat isn't really the best thing to start with. Also do you have access to a sewing machine? Not one of those little seeming thingies, they aren't made to be used on heavy fabrics/thick pieces of clothing and so they would not work for a coat, and it is an awful lot of stitching to try and do by hand, I'd say at least 14 hours. Another thing to consider since you don't really have any experience: do you actually have time to make the coat? Even though a sewing machine will make the stitching take only a few hours you are still going to need plenty of time to cut out the pattern and fabric, plus doing any detail work that you wanted to do. It may simply be a much better option for you to start with something less involved and to tackle the coat at a later time.

I don't wear skirts or dresses. I might test making a t-shirt.

Oh, sorry. English is not my native language, it sounded good to me :P though, when I think if it, you're right, it sounds stupid.

Uh, I've got one of those portable thingies.

Yes, I'm not working, still studying, so I get home around 3-4 every day and don't have much to do after, usually just sit by the comp.

Why do you want to sew it by yourself? The sewing machine itself is so expensive plus the fabric materials needed.
