Knit team.......ASSEMBLE!

So, I'm thinking of taking up knitting as I have very little to do right now and wondered if anyone could give me a few pointers on where to start in terms of good online guides, books, places to get patterns etc etc. I can already do the most basic of knitting but I'm looking for something that's actually going to challenge me otherwise I'll get bored and have endless balls of sad wool just sat in the corner looking at me.

So, go ahead, educate me oh wise knitters of the forum.

I really like the book Stitch n Bitch, the patterns aren't too crazy, but it ranks them from easiest to hardest in category (like easy hat, intermediate hat, difficult hat, easy scarf, intermediate scarf, difficult scarf, etc.) and the patterns are youthful enough that I don't feel like my grandmother made them for me. There have been a few sequel books but they don't seem to live up to the original, to me at least.

Two great websites are craftster, which is more like a forum where people post in category, but I've gotten some really wonderful tutorials from there before, and ravelry, which you need to create an account but you'll have lots of access to different patterns and forums. I'm not very active but it has mostly to do with the fact that I have no friends on it, I'm yodo there if you want to add me.

Pinterest is also helpful for when you find random shit on the web and want to share it with others.

And of course if you get stuck, there's a million tutorials on youtube.

Suddenly I am reminded of Tom Hank's "electric city". Where the city is ruled by a secret matriarch council, that discusses everything while knitting.

I rage knit as well.. but I do it so that I don't kill people. I am often found standing in the middle of a supermarket aisle knitting furiously while my ex-gf-now-housemate reads the label of every single product before buying it.

I can understand why she does it because she's vegetarian and wants to ensure that the things that she buys don't contain animal products, and we try to buy things that are on special so we often can't just buy the same brands.

But even though I know the reasoning behind it, it still DRIVES ME FUCKING INSANE. And there is only so much amusement to be found in putting condoms in old people's shopping trolleys.

Yes. Me Gusta!

I suggest something that's still pretty basic but with seed stitch, increases/decreases and stripes to keep it interesting. (And I-cord lacing loops.)

This is what I started and nearly finished before getting too busy to knit. http://therunningyarn.wordpress.com/...-free-pattern/

I picked up 'Anticraft: Knitting, Beading and Stitching for the Slightly Sinister', and it had a ton of ideas. The online archive has tons of patterns as well. I reccomend it.

Knitting is so trendy, take up crochet. It only takes one crooked little stick. Anticraft is an adorable book, I like the two-headed rat pattern best.

Knitting is awesome. I will agree with everyone else about Stitch 'n Bitch, which contained the first few things I made. Something I tried when I wanted to be challenged was making a knitted quilt. I just made a bunch of squares out of different jewel tones and then sewed them all together. The challenging part was that I made each one a different texture. So one cable knit, one in a seed stitch, one in fan stitch, etc. It's a great way to practice some of those tough textures without committing to an entire cable knit sweater. To that end, I'd recommend 50 Fabulous Knit Stitches by Rita Weiss.

Also in my knitting books section:
Knit 2 Together, Ullman and Clark - lots of cute clothes, including bloomers
Charmed Knits, Hansel - Harry Potter knits
Knitting On Top of the World, Epstein - Knit porn. I only dream of being able to make this stuff some day.

And finally, to a.d.'s point, a lot of people who get bored knitting love to crochet. I am not one of them, because I apparently suck at counting and my crochet always turns into an amorphous blob. Predictably, my cross-stitch attempts have been like a craft Hindenburg. But if you do OK with non-linear crafts, crochet is worth a shot.

I like both. I think crocheting, once you get the idea of non-linear crafting, is probably a lot easier. Its making that transition that is really hard XD One day it just clicked though and I was great. I stopped knitting for a while because crocheting is so much faster, but I missed the delicate drape of something knitted. I also like that I can knit without looking unless I'm doing something complicated, I can knit while watching anime or something. If I want something lacy though its much simpler to crochet and still maintain my sanity.

So there's pros and cons to each!

Haven't really learned to crochet properly.. mainly because my mum was a knitter while I was growing up, then I inherited a lot of her knitting needles/patterns and ran with it.

She's alive, she just quit.

I've been knitting since I was 4 or 5 I think. My dear (late) grandmother taught me. However, all I can knit are scarfs and armwarmers/fingerless gloves! xD I'd love to knit a cool hat for the winter (and make it look like a mowhawk on top) but I'm really, really bad at reading descriptions... and somehow, 5 of my knitting needles have mysteriously vanished. o_O

go to your local thrift store, pick up some wool and two needles the same size. Then sit down and watch you tube for how to videos. Alos you'd probably find something locally that maybe able to teach you. If not, start your own group.

good luck.

Is this thread still a thing? I would like it to be a thing.

*spades it out of 2013* It's still good! Just a shallow grave!

I have the most darling cloche pattern, and almost finished the hat before I realized it was terribly wrong. The book I got it from posted the errata for it on their website, and I'd have to just about completely undo it to fix it. And it was a super tight knit so the yarn is just messed up.

Q_Q ended up throwing it out. My sister is preggers so I'm working on a baby blanket right now, was thinking about buying a yellow Star Trek uniform onesie and crocheting a hairband like Geordi's visor, and maybe attempt a bonnet for her baptism. I feel like I've been hanging on to baby patterns just waiting for someone to get pregnant for years XD

I haven't knitted for a good long time I've been exhausted, busy and in a rut.

I diiid sew something though. My friend who just moved here was struggling with the cold so I quickly sewed a heatable 'wheat bag' actually filled with rice.

I've been thinking to knit and sew clothing for my mums porcelain dolls she gifted to me but there are quite a few tasks to be done before that.

I've been doing some cross stitch lately. I got a practice project from Michael's but I found quite a few geeky patterns that I'd love to do, as well as a few poems I wouldn't mind doing and hanging up in the apartment.
