They're boring plaid. I wear them with my Chucks when I go shopping so that I can seem fashionable. ;-)

You can still be goth as long as you have the state of mind. You can be alternative, and depressed about the whole life thing, and open-minded, no matter what you're wearing or where you are. You can also like goth music, and that's something that won't change no matter what you wear.

Become a whore. They'll be so gratefull that you wear clothes that cover you in the end, even if they are "gothic" that they'll accept anything other than "come and get me" clothes.

Oh, so because i'm happy, I'm not Gothic...
Oh dear.. that's what I must be doing wrong.
Define the term depressed. I could do upset *mock cries* or suicidal *ties piano wire around neck*
which one?

Hmmm... Actually, I was wrong about the depressed thing. You really don't have to be depressed to be goth. The main requirement is that you listen to the music. What I meant by being depressed about life is that you see no meaning in it, and no light at the end of the tunnel. But if I think about it, I tend to be very happy at times. Mainly when I'm with my bf. I guess I should think before I type. Oh, well, I'm only human.

Still you define what goth "should" be. Let's just go with being what and who you are without trying to impress. That's enough.

While the gothic subculture of today has developed its own art, literature, state of mind, fashion, etc. it is still undeniable that the whole culture seeded from one thing: the music. In my opinion, all you really need to be in order to be considered goth is have a taste for deathrock/gothrock/darkwave etc.

Okay, I have realized this is a fight that I won't win; I resign. I'm sorry that I was trying to "define" the subculture. But I ask you if you can exactly define what makes someone goth? I have my opinions, now I want to hear yours with open ears. I'm willing to listen, and no I'm not being sarcastic or smartass.

I see. So even a guy that likes Manson, Korn, and Slipknot just because they're popular can be considered goth? And don't get the wrong idea here. I'm just confused as to whether the subculture can truly be defined, whether mall goths we frown upon can truly be considered one of us. Help me out, here.

Sometimes people can't afford to dress the subculture. That, or they have no way of getting to stores, and whatnot. >_> *coughlikemecough*

You can be goth without dressing it. Being goth is about being yourself. So really, it' what's on the inside that counts. Not how many spiked bracelets you can fit on your arm.

So goth is really about being yourself? So many different views on "what is goth" is really giving me a headache.

STUPID PHONY GOTHS

Being goth is not about wearing all black, being depressed or being suicidal and stupid shit like that, what true goth means
is "one who sees the beauty in both life and death"

Being true goth is a beautiful thing

That's my take on it, anyway. Nancy KilPatrick said pretty much the same thing, if not similar to it, in The Goth Bible.

But whatever. :P

Wearing all black does not define a gothic person; you should know that. A true goth can wear anything and ppl can still tell the difference.

You are correct. It makes me want to send them to their room and take away their computer.
