Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

I can't recall what albums the songs are from, but Down in a Hole and Them Bones are in my top 100 songs.

They are both from Dirt. They could just as well have called the album Heroin, Ha.

Chord progressions? You make me laugh Mir. My playing style with guitar is built heavily off Japanese hardcore punk/noisecore. Whatever makes the most noise is what I like. Bass wise I was influenced by Chuck Dukowski from BLACK FLAG and Captain Sensible from THE DAMNED. The first bass song I learned was Six Pack.

Learning new chord progressions is a fun way to expand yourself as a player. Once you grow older, three chord punk routines will get old. Really old.

I suppose, but I've been playing more bass lately, seeing as I experiment better with a bass. I don't know why.

That goes for most of their albums though.
On another subject, what do you think of Jerry Cantrells solo stuff? Personally I like it better overall than alice in chains.

I do like it but vocally, Layne Staley was just so much better. Imho. I've only heard bits and pieces of his stuff though. I'm going to go look for his stuff now. (I kind of lost interest in them after Stayley disappeared and Alice in Chains stopped writing new music. Around 1996-7)

See, I can read sheet music for clarinet, but, I can't for guitar. So I have no choice but to read tablature.
I'm terrible at theory on both though....because I'm crap at maths...and anything like that drives me insane. So I just go with "these notes sound good together and these ones don't". I've basically cheated my way through music.
Well done!

Maybe you're a better rhythm player than a lead player, I know I am.
I need a bass... !

Ive never been into learning other people's songs but at the same time I am sure I would play alot better if I spent more time with precision over "WHat I feel like doing"

It's wise to learn other musicians in the beginning, to experiment with various styles and techniques. Once you've gotten the hang of it, you can start developing your own.
For beginners, I strongly recommend Mark Tremonti to master hammer-ons and pull-offs...along with solos. Then there is of course, Kurt Cobain...to master annoying bar cords at first.

I've played guitar and bass for about a year now, and I'm pretty useless tbh. I play daily, but not for very long, and I usually randomly play notes and chords (the few I know) trying to come up with something that sounds good; and I'll learn certain riffs from songs I like (I know only 1 or 2 songs all the way through). I have fun doing it, so I don't mind that I have as much skill as a bucket
I play an Epiphone LP100 in vintage sunburst, and a black Ibanez GSR205 Bass (gotta love that low B string ^_^) through a Peavey Envoy and some Boss pedals.

To me, playing music is all about whatever sounds good to you. Chordal theory isn't all that hard and it just helps you find other sounds that might/might not sound good to you.

Ditto! Thats how I did too. Jumping between Drop C, D and standard E tunings was a bitch though. I now mostly just play Drop C/Db stuff in Drop D.

Do you play a seven string or a six string?

A six string....a seven string only gives you like...five extra notes...and when you downtune you lose 5 off the high notes.
That doesn't bother me, considering the sort of music I like to play.

Les Paul
Fender Stratocaster
Oscar Schmidt 12-string.
I have an encyclopedia of random stuff that I can play. That encyclopedia includes a lot of Hendrix. That's where I got my chops from
I've been playing for 6 years. I also play blues, jazz, and classical music. I also have a second unorthodox approach to the electric guitar, much like Tom Morello or Johnny Greenwood.

I wanted to learn some songs by other musicians, but I'm just not good enough, so I write my own. Improving bit by bit, until I'm good enough to play other musicians songs.

Hm, I like the sound of that. Hell, I might even have fan clubs... nay, too much to hope for. Same for sold out concert halls, arenas... eh, still, one can dream.

this is a really fuckin' easy tune from a song of mine called "Never Getting Laid". You just repeat it over and over again. I recorded it too fast, so slow down a bit when playing.
Tabs are (n = no pick) :
E-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5/4-4-2-0
A-n-n-7-n-n-n-7-n-n-n-6-4-2
