Some covers are okay. I like it if they keep the original feel or the song but doing something at least a little different to make it their own it's a hard balance. Right now I'm kinda pissed at the fact that HIM did a cover of Blue Oyster Cult's Don't Fear the Reaper and I hate that cover so much. I can't listen to the original version the same anymore HIM totally ruined that song.

I honestly don't mind their cover. Yeah it's un-goth and cheesy and whatever, but it's not offensive to listen to or anything. It's just their finnish-mopey-whatever style pasted onto the song.

The original is still great.

Unto Ashes do an interesting cover of it too, Lydia Lunch did one too.

This post has encouraged me to join gothic.net. More than likely because I am a big time sucker for a rad cover tune. In my personal opinion, if a band can twist and reformat a song to make it fit their genre, fantastic. There are so many songs that I may love IF it were in a genre I enjoyed. So anyhow, down to the nitty gritty, here is my list of good covers! ENJOY!

I'm not in a position where I'm forced to listen to a bad cover so a bad cover would never ruin a song for me. If I want to hear a song done the same way as the original then I'd rather listen to the original. I hate going to a bar and hearing a dreadful cover band attempt to hit all the same notes.

I posted previously the cover of "I Can See For Miles" by Theatre of Ice, completely different from the original, but very cool because of that. It actually captures a feeling of paranoia that the original failed to. Theatre of Ice also does a cover of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" that is more like the original and I don't think it works as well. They do go off to a different place toward the end of the song, with the strange serial killer poem and all the instruments falling away, and that part works.

Not a bad choice!

Personally I'm liking Einsturzende Neubauten - Morning Dew. It's got the post-apocalyptic feel that none of the other versions do.

One of the rare cases in which I actually prefer the cover version, not the original.

In Every Dream Home a Heartache (Roxy Music) is quite popular among goth artists. Rozz Williams, Fields of the Nephilim, Peter Murphy... Anyone else?

I think when you cover a song it's not supposed to be exactly the same as the original, especially if your a true artist and have actual talent and can stand out.

I'd say the same, but there are some exceptions. Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus is one : it's quite exactly similar to the original... But it works.
