if you're actually 'goth', it will come out in whatever clothes you choose to wear, whether or not they are black. my best friend/lover wears white t-shirts most of the time, but is still unmistakably of the mindset which led to the rise of the 'goth' subculture.
also, i happen to be wearing bright, blood-red corduroy pants right now. god i hate pants.

I do own a lot of black, but it only makes up half my wardrobe, maybe a little more. I like it because it's slimming, sophisticated, and mysterious. And it looks good on me.
I also own a lot of green (all shades), purple (all shades), and red, because I look good in these colours.
I'm still me no matter what I wear... whether I'm wearing my black velvet ruffled blouse, a witty T-shirt over my red-and-black striped top, or yes, even my cotton-candy pink sweater.

I wear black partly because charcoal (and blood) don't show up as well on it.
Black is also one of the few colors that can make up your entire wardrobe without looking stupid.
Black can be sleek, stylish, sad, angry, or serene.
Black goes well with almost every color.
Black goes well with black and white makeup and strangely colored hair.
Black clothes don't need to be washed as often as lighter colored ones.
Clothes of any color can be dyed black.
Black has obvious connotations.
Black blends in with shadows.
Black clothes tend to take people's focus to the wearer's face.

i agree with a few points here, and disagree with a few others. my take on why goths wear black is the following.
black is mysterious, dark, "evil", and signifies the unknown. black is night, when evil lurks. it's sad, which is how most goths feel.
i wear black for all the reasons i mentioned above, and because i feel comfortable in it. it seems to suit me and my mood. however i *dont* wear it because other goths do too. i think the gothic subculture is one that promotes individuality so it's not about following others, but doing what you feel right.

Black is the symbol of mourning & of darkness. But i often wore red because it is bloody like the girl i have created in my story. I often like it and it makes me fell closer to reason.

Well. No one really knows why do we wear black. We find a lot of reasons, but is that why the gothic style choose the black? I just see it this way. We just do. As Charlie said in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory once: "Not everything has to have a reason".
Think about it

First, I'd like to say that where I currently live, which is Oklahoma, black has become more of a trend. It might as well be a passing fad. No one really takes it seriously, and most of those that try to are just posers or punks (and I mean punk in a totally harmless way). Then again, who said anyone had to be serious all the time? Why can't a person just wear whatever they feel like wearing without too much judgement? Probably because it's just human nature. I told one of my best friends I realized what a goth actually was, and that I AM a goth. I don't think she really believes me. She's a smart chic. She's not so oblivious to the meaning of goth as most people are. Probably the majority of my highschool thinks that goth directly has something to do with satanism or not believing in God. Idiots right? I knew it wasn't directly that before I had a clue of what goth was. Seriously though most people here aren't goth. A lot of kids are just kind of punk whether they'd call themselves so or not. Though I wonder, if you choose not to call yourself something, than doesn't that mean you aren't because you chose not to be even if it is embedded in you and you continue to be the same? A lot the them just like black; it's their favorite color. Some of them are just drawn to it. Don't ask me why, and trust me I have nothing against them, but I don't really socialize with them; we're kind of in different crowds. I kind of wish I could hang with them because a lot of them seem a lot more mature and intelligent, and they just seem like the kind of crowd I'd like to be with. Don't get me wrong though, I'd never shun my friends. I couldn't, I love them and myself too much. I don't dress in all black (basically because my parents don't want me walking around with them looking like a "freak"). Even if I could though I probably wouldn't wear all black. I used to be really into fashion and still am, though I prefer dressing more punk/goth. I like a lot of colors, but I wouldn't feel right if I didn't throw some black in with it. Considering normally when I buy colorful clothes they don't look very goth or punk (or skater which I also enjoy the look of) at all, but I'm sure with time, money, and practice I could fix that. Black symbolizes the way I feel. I'm very introverted and introspective. I don't seem to fit in well with even my closest friends. The only person who really gets me is my little brother (only two years younger) who prefers to hate me. I'm kind of withdrawn and anti-social, and trust me I don't try to be. I'm very much into the unknown and supernatural and somber or morbid things. I try my best to see art where people only see ugly. Also white feels very negative to me. Like a blank sheet of paper, and the only way I can fill it in is with my black pen (or a pencil if I run out of ink). By the way I do consider myself somewhat of an artist. I like to throw around fun, loud and beautiful, bold colors. I think it moreso suits my very elusive and vibrant imagination. I also feel protected when in black and wearing chains and bracelets, etc. Most of all it just feels right. I almost never regret black. Black is just right, and it does something a color can't do. It's almost unexplainable, but like all great genius it may one day be discovered before the end is near. (Notice "the end" is also something that black represents) I am a Christian and though I find it quite difficult and unagreeable at times, I have nothing against any other religion. More than likely someone of another religion will find my religion hard to tolerate. Especially with so many Christians going around today trying to take away our first amendment which was one of the initial causes of the Constitution I believe. I mean in the Bible God asks you to spread the word, but it's getting so out of hand today people are practically soliciting Christ. I know this post has been way to long. Forgive me.

I wear blue.
Black is dark, light up the dark just a little bit and you get blue.
Just like White is light, darken that just a little bit and you get yellow.(Sorry, I've studied colors and it's one of my obbsessions.)
Black I like, blue I love.
Maybe most goths don't want to lighten up?
....just kidding

because..
i,being gothic myself, think that most goths..not all wear black because its a way of expressing the feeling they have inside.feeling like your world is nothing but dark and scary.im not saying thats the reason but i personally wear black because i feel so hollow and empty inside.the world is against us goths and it makes us feel such hatred and feel like we arent wanted(most of the time we arent).i know im not wanted by ANYONE in the town i live in.its nothing but little preps and whores.i really hate it.

You present yourself as a Goth because you choose to. You can't complain when people are "against you" because of the way you look if you look that way by choice. Sure, it's irritating, but it's not like there's nothing you can do about it.

Well I know I wear black simply because it's how I feel inside...
And it also makes me feel unseen even though that is just a feeling and in reality it draws more attention to myself not that I really care and if "normal" people don't like it they can shove it up their arse

i like black, and i always have. it's s'posed to be slimming and elegant.
its easy to clean and find. and i dont have to pay outrageous ammounts of money for blakc clothes. well, i could but it isnt like AE and Guess and such where everything is more than 80$.... and most important of all i feel safe wearing nothing but black. colour makes me feel nervous and awkward. although it also, pisses the school off when kids wear all blakc clothes.

I wear black because I like it. It makes me feel good, and it makes me happy. The only thing that sucks is when you are trying to find a certain article of clothing in your laundry basket after you washed it... (at this point you are usually in a hurry) It's all the same color so all you have to go by is texture. That annoys me.

i wear black because i have an aesthetic problem with colour. because i have very fair skin and hair bright colours make me look washed out and light or plae colours make me almost disappear. i pretty much have to wear dark colours to look half way decent. very vain i know..........
the deeper reason is that i don't think in colours, their symbloism means nothing to me and so why should i wear them?
