Actually, if you look back to someone who might be a possible Goth influencer, writer Edgar Allan Poe, many claimed that he looked like he was always attending a funeral. He explained that people inside are angry; why not let it show on the outside? I'm sorry that this post contributes to a thread that is ages-old, but I felt the need to contribute.

Black is also symbolic of what is rejected in society. Goth is a counterculture, and thus a rejection in itself of everything that mainstream society accepts. It takes its roots in Romanticism, which takes its roots in the Dark Ages. Religion and the dark architecture took prominence, hence the dark clothing was meant to represent the same sort of feeling put into the churches of the time. Gothic staple band, Bauhaus, as one remembers, also paid tribute to architectural movements, and was originally labeled Bauhaus 1919.

Yes, but Bauhaus only started wearing black when their fans did.

I just like it. *shrug* besides, black is very "in your face". Or at least it was until every one and their Grandma wears it. But I refuse to accept pink as the new black!
I am also a ‘winter’. I can’t wear bright colors very well, it just doesn’t look right.

I'm too pale to wear a lot of colors. Blacks, greys, and even the occasional white look nice on me. As does green, for some reason.
Besides, black looks nice and dignified.

The simple answer is that I just like it.
Besides that, it complements my skin tone well and makes me look stout rather than chunky.
I like some dark colors, generally red, gray and green. Bright colors make me feel uncomfortable, like I'm trying to be noticed. Black and dark colors make me feel like I'm in the background. I don't like to be the center of attention.

Because all the preps wear pink and all the bright colors of the rainbow, and because black is just COOL. I like colors besides black--like red and pink (but not highlighter-bright pink).

Black makes me feel good, its like my comfort blanket. I have a black hoodie (which I gave away to my ex boyfriend the day we broke up) which i HAD to wear, everywhere, even in the baking sun. Black and shades of red are the main colors I wear. Its fun.
I also find that people are more intimidated by my appearance, so it is an encouragement. Its awesome seeing a guy get in your face about something and a quiet/shy girl like me in all black get up, and make them back off. <3 Its just.. weird yet makes life interesting ^_^; Its not the best example of why I like it, but it happened. They just clear a path.

Because it's sensual and it makes me look cool (lol), unlike pastel colours which make me look like I have cancer.
I like the contrast between black and pale skin, it's excellent.

I like it so I don't have to worry about matching before I scramble out of my dorm for my first classes. I wear black because it goes well with my light coffee skin color and my dark hair. I wear black bcause i can stand out and recede any time I please. I wear black because I like it.

We wear black because it expresses who we are. It gives us something to identify with that feels oh-so-right to us on the inside. I feel different in black and other dark colors than I do in say, bright primary colors. It just feels right to me.

I think Goths wear black because it's the color of mystery.

I suppose most goths wear black becouse most other goths wear black; conforming to this is both a personal statement and an affirmation of belonging. For someone who's not goth (or a burgler), the question may translate as "why do you prefer to wear black at funerals?" The difference is that goths conform to this quite happily, as it suits their preferences.

Don't know about everyone else, but I wear it because it's my fave color, and has been since I was 13-14 years old. The color comforts me, and is like an old friend. I'll wear other colors, but always return to my fave.

i vote other because black has always been in fashion. it simply works. it can be both stern and sensual and always manages to look somewhat dignified.

Black has been my favourite color for a long time...I think scence I was 11...So now I just wear it all the time. It really annoys me when people say that black isn't a color, it's a shade...

It's a nice color, and it matches with good with dozen other colors and more. It's also makes me look a bit skinnier. Another reason, which coincides with the first reason, you don't to have to dig around in the closet looking for clothes that'd match, just throw on black pants, and you get the point.

I just like black. Black is morbid, and that's why I personally like it. Plus, it's very slimming.
