Goth rock/culture generation-which era bestest n00bs?
Goth has, like all great things, undergone changes, new ideas, new people, etc.-though it all comes down to the specified point-which generation is the best regarding music and culture.
I'll break down the differences
Music (c. mid seventies)-Generation 1st Wave-Goth rock-Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the banshees, Specimen, SexGang Children (more essantial then one would normally think), Virgin Prunes, Deathrock subgenre emerges, post-punk
Culture (c. late seventies, REAL early eighties)-Generation 1st wave-Old school goth nightclubs, birth of the batcave, a new influenced fashion from punk emerges in the United Kingdom and the United States with darker tendencies-though still classified by most to be 'punk' or even 'neo-punk' (source: Batcave history)
Music (c. mid 1980s)-Generation 2nd Wave-Goth rock-Sisters of Mercy, Fields of Nephillim, Xmal, Post-Punk dawns, Bauhaus breaks up (WTF? HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN?!!) Goth musique and culture becomes reconignized with pop culture, most notably dark neoexpressiom-like films such as the Hunger
Culture (c. Mid 1980s)-Generation 2nd Wave-Goth culture-Batcave grows larger, the term goth is used often in clubs and occasionally concerts, the fashion grows continually further from the original punk (which is still good), darkwave-subcatergories emerge, mainstream popularity continually with film, etc. overall good era for goth culture other than the disembanding of Bauhaus
Music. (90s-present)-Generation-3rd wave-Goth rock-Original and some mid goth bands begin to break up, subcultural cousins are seen in the mainstream such as Industrial (which is a whole different timeline) though with Industrial comes the confusion with 'Industrial' bands with a particular goth image-citing most importantly, Marilyn Manson. Thus pop-goth and the term goth is already a fully developed term. However, with this comes "alternative" bands with a dark image though very mainstream. Such leads to confusion and so called "disputed subgenres"? That have little to do with goth.
However, Deathrock revival emerged eventually, though like fairly new goth bands remained underground and hidden from the cruel light of the mainstream.
Culture. (90s-present)-Generation-3rd wave-Goth goes through many new fashion introduces, such as the neo goth (which has nothing in common with the original as stated) look, cyberlook, though sadly, we in the culture or any general outsiders are accused of crimes such as Columbine and other nonsense crap that has nothing to do with goth at all. In the aftermath, however, a sign shows that goth is being displayed as an accepted culture. Yays for us.
So, please, vote for your favourite generation of goth musique/culture. If I've done anything wrong, please point it out and I will pull out my maschoistic tools to punish myself.
Let it begin!!
~~goth forever~~!

1st Gen all the way! The original Goth/Batcave stuff is the best. Other 1st Gen bands include Southern Death Cult, Theatre of Hate, X-mal Deutchland, UK Decay, Play Dead, Ausgang (Kabuki), Christian Death (US), and Kommunity FK (US). All favorites of mine. Haha.
Also, you forgot about the Deathrock revival in the ninties. Tisk tisk, Vyvian.

1st gen 80's gets my vote for the peak of creativity. Bands finally had formed a genre, an audience, and finally understood the beauty and art of this darker form of punk. Industrial and darkwave bands like Einsturzende and Sigue Sigue Sputnik were also part of the scene and even played in the Batcave alongside the Specimen. Deathrock --American gothic rock-- was also forming thanks largely to Christian Death and 45 Grave. The genre was branching out and really coming into its own world.

I could take both of you combined!
That's just because I have a nasty habit of fighting dirty and targeting pressure points, though.

I would have to say 3rd.
There's really something nice going on lately with the adherence and respect shown to the 1st and 2nd wave. This wave seems to have a greater sense of purpose and identity. Though the public confuses goth with what the mainstream is spewing out, there's something more... elite or romantic about knowing the difference. Goth and industrial are almost exclusive. I also think the mainstream attention and misunderstandings makes the culture even more obscure than ever before.
I'm also finding hints of not the mainstream assimilating goth, but goth assimilating mainstream. There's something about making mash ups of pop songs with old school industrial or goth music in such a way that it's almost like the mainstream is getting ass pounded by a huge black spiky strap on.

Quiet, you! The only reason you beat me in the past is because you actually stabbed me with knives. (True story)
And Magz, watch out when fighting her, she has a habit of "accidental" groin-kneeing. Hahaha.

I voted 1st, because most of the bands I listen to come from this time (or earlier; see: rockabilly). I do have a lot of respect for the 3rd wave aswell, and its artists, and try to get to know it better.

First wave, 'cos the Banshees, Bauhaus, ASF and Killing Joke are some of my favourite bands.
