Save Under St. Marks

Hey guys,

So, here in NYC there's a big push building to save one of my favorite underground theatres from closing. Check out this PSA about it, you may recognize someone.

I'll donate when I get paid. In all honesty, it won't be much but I'll give what I can.

I can't give anything right now as I'm at work and I will be out of town (and will be without computer access) until Monday but I should be able to give something then.

I feel all warm and fuzzy inside now. That could just be the painkillers though.

Painkillers usually just make you feel fuzzy, the warm bit must come from helping others.

So what are the other phases of the plan to save St Marks?

Horse Trade hasn't announced everything they plan to do yet, but I have a joint fundraiser with them planned for mid-July. I think there are a few other fundraisers and a documentary planned. Plus we're collecting donations at various shows throughout the summer.

People suck. I got called a bleeding heart and a sucker for donating to this cause by my 'friend'. He says charity begins at HOME and donating to a cause outside my own country is stupid and shows how I am an idiotic fool who is taken in by every sob story I hear. He can suck it, a good cause is a good cause wherever in the world it might be. Fucking douchebag.

That's awesome MC. In my experience, peers react angrily to charity because they don't donate and feel bad about not doing it.

Anyone who says "Charity begins at home" usually doesn't give to charity.

Thanks again btw.

When I was raising money for activewater I had some people I knew freak out on me, and start lambasting me for raising money to help "meetheopians" and screaming "charity begins at home".

In my experience, anyone who says "Charity begins at home" usually doesn't give to charity.

Thanks again btw.

He's an arsehole tbh. I don't know why I'm friends with him other than the fact we've known each other for so long. You're right though, he reacts badly to any mention of charitable donations because he's too tight to donate himself. I basically told him that it's my money and I'll spend it or donate it however I see fit and if he doesn't like it, he can suck my left one. Also, you're welcome.

If I had any spare cash, I'd donate. I seriously don't have anything at the moment, hell I can't even afford to by a .99 cent book off Amazon. I'd give money, if I had some. Hell, I'd send you the change out of my purse, if it were shared a currency.

I was just curious about how Horsetrade were proposing to save the theatre. I'm guessing that $50,000 wouldn't buy a whole lot of Real estate in NY.

National, international, who cares. A good cause is a good cause.

$50,000 is the down-payment. the whole building is a couple million and the theatre itself is in the basement.

So they're either going to try to buy just the basement, or take out enough loans to buy the whole building and make back the money in rent (from the apts about the theatre).

Good luck, I hope you guys can do it.

I hate seeing grassroots enterprises being closed down.

I was involved in trying to save a large open space in one of the former cities I lived in. We were going to turn it into an inner city alternative farming enterprise, with space for local artists to come and run workshops and exhibitions, and for local groups to get together and use the area et al.

But the narrow minded council wasn't ready for that kind of alternative/community building activity, so they gave it to someone else who bulldozed the buildings and built a road on it.

I really hope St Marks makes it.

Do you have any additional information on the theater? I have a friend who I would like to tell about this, as she is known to give rather generously to the arts, but I know that she will want to know everything there is to know before she gives any money and I want to be ready to answer as much as I can when I bring it up.

Seriously though, there's no place like USM. Literally everything goes. Songs about Robert Burns? Crazy Noise-Rock? Punk? Performance art? Stand-up comedy? Variety shows? Bulesque? 60 year old female yogis bending themselves into pretzels? A 30-minute puppet show-versions of Paradise Lost? Guys throwing clay @ each other? It's all good.

Thanks for the links I'll talk to her over the weekend and pass along your info if she has any questions I can't answer. I'm not sure if anything will come of it as she does tend to keep her donations relatively local but no harm in trying. If you hear from a sweet southern lady named Virginia that would be her.
