All you need is an hour or two a day. Most people have the time for that. Also, it takes time to learn an instrument and it will be hard. If you want to tune down to make it easier, feel free but it's a bit of a quick fix if you're finding something difficult.

Some people don't even have an hour, or two. Fortunately, you don't need to be a good guitarist to make a career out of it.

I never suggested that you had to be AMAZING to be successful in music, however if you want to seriously make a career in music, it kind of suggests that you would probably want to put in some time and have a real interest in your instrument because you've honestly thought about that career choice. For example, Session Musicians and Song Writers have spent a lot of time perfecting their skills so they get as much work as possible.

You can write good music without being a technical genius on your instrument but if you don't even have an hour to play guitar the you certianly ain't gunna have the time to write a song and spend the time getting into the music industry.

I also down tune my bass and guitar for the music I write. I tune to C flat for when I work on my Industrial metal band and then drop D for my crust band.

Question here:

What tuning is used commonly in doom or stoner metal like Electric Wizard and or Cathedral. I'm looking for a heavy bottom end.

For myself, I tune everything down two and leave it flat. For the most part, it's preference. I know Wreck Of The Hesperus does a drop-D tuning with everything tuned down one (Drop-C?????????) for a lot of their stuff, and then just makes them up as they go along.

For the most part, though, it's the gear they use afterwards, DOD Meat Box, an octaver, whatnot.

Free stuff is good, you just have to know how to use it. Distroyr is a great plug-in, EQ31 is one of my go-to EQ's. A lot of the time, I just like to edit duplicates of the actual .WAV and layer them.

For tunings the most common for that style of music is ...

(from low to high) DGCFAD , which is a whole step down from concert tuning, or you could try `Baritone tuning` which is (from low to high) BEADGB.

Some musicians might even tune lower than this ...

(low to high) ADGCEA

It will also help the sound if you use a very heavy gauge of strings such as 11, 12, 13 (jazz players use this gauge a lot for the added low end to the sound this thick gauge allows. It is also highly recommended to get a Luthier or your local guitar tech at a music store to give your instrument a `professional set-up` so the guitar and its necks are properly adjusted and calibrated for heavier gauges of string !!!.

What pick ups and tone woods does your guitar have, this will be another factor in the sound ?

I'm thinking of getting a new guitar just for this style. Right now I'm playing a 1963 Gibson SG, my Dad's first guitar, and I don't want to ruin or mess around with it too much. So, I'm just in the looking around fase right now. But thanks for the help!

I've been playing guitar for 2 years, and my equipment is good enough, for practice, at least to me. It's an LTD's EX-50 and Micro-Cube amp. I also have classic guitar that is too cheap to have a brand on it... ^^

as for playing, i think i don't play very well, but i could, if i'd practiced more... so basically i think i could have played much better when considering how long i'm playing...
