Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not finished with any of my songs. Though, one of my songs I'm working on follows a Bm,A,D,G,A chord progression, basically all downstrokes the first 2 times around, then it goes to a downstroke/upstroke type thing.

By 'n', do you mean the sound is killed or not picked at all?

Not picked at all. Leave it empty.

Here's how you would tab it then;
A-----7--------7-------6-4-2
E-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5/4-4-2-0

Pretty much, but I couldn't get the picks to line up and it was fucking me off.

How many chords would you say you know?

I have no idea. I've been playing since I was twelve, and I was twelve a long time ago. I don't know the names of chords, I just know finger placements and shit. And sometimes I just put my fingers anywhere that sounds good.

I know... like 20-30 chords. What I really need to work on though, are the scales, and tuning by ear.

It's a cliche, but practice really does make perfect. When I started I'd practice four hours a day, just playing around, making the guitar make weird sounds or trying to make it sound like other songs I'd heard. I taught myself with out tabs or music, so I learned everything by ear. That's a brilliant way to get to know the sound.

Fuck it, I gave up tabbing variations on that. I'll just put it all together and upload it later. I love playing around A minor pentatonics. And if this shit, its because I just thought this up 5 minutes ago. Also, implying slides and legato is a real pain so I didn't bother.

That's a real nice riff. If you play it on an electric and plug in a phaser pedal so that it swells towards the end, it sounds real gnarly.

Thanks dude! I was playing your riff and I liked it, but I'm pretty sure I don't have the timing/rhythm right, so I doodled till I came up with that.
I was playing it on an electric through a PODXT with the JCM800 Amp model and lots of delay.

It didn't sound right with a delay, so that's why I threw in the phaser. Also, try downing the bass on your amp, make the treble about 3/4 and the mid all the way up. On my amp, it sounds real clean and nice.

This is how its running through;
JCM800 -> Stomp box: Screamer -> Analog Chorus and Delay Tube Echo.
*humps his POD*
So many options and ways to chain everything, so little time.
I have the bass all the way up. I'm a huge Kyuss fan, so down tuned guitars high on low end with mids dropped down and treble around 70% are my thing. ha.

If you're into weird sounds, I recommend you get as many Arion pedals as you can. They're brilliant for circuit bending, and they can make your guitar make some tripped out sounds.

Arion pedals? I've actually never heard of them. Vintage pedals or can you get them easily at retailers/online?

You can get them for dirt cheap on EBay. I got all mine for a grand total of 120 Euros, and I have five of them.

I want this one -> Arion SFL-1 Stereo Flanger Guitar Effect Pedal
- £20.38
That sounds like fun and it would allow me to reproduce a lot of the stuff Morello does! You try this one?

I don't know what's that one's like for circuit bending, but either way it'll be a good pedal. People always expect Arion's to be shit because they're so cheap, but for what you get it's a fucking steal!

What is circuit bending? I'm not sure if I know what the idea is behind that. Maybe I know it by a different name or something but I doubt it.

It's where you fuck with the electronics inside shit. You wire up bits that weren't meant to be wired up, put in a switch and you have a new function. You can turn speak and spells, furbies, toy telephones, etc, into complete electronic instruments. I have a toy guitar that can now do crazy solos by pushing one button. I got a furby that sounds like it would kill your unborn child. It's FUN !!!

Yup. Just don't ever try it with something that runs from a wall socket, 'cuz you could kill yourself. Stuff like toys, battery operated keyboards, pedals, whatnot, they're great for it. I circuit bent a handheld CD player, now it makes some of the sickest sounds you'll ever hear.

You could always record it clean and then muck about with it on the PC (various audio tools etc) though, couldn't you?

Not quite. It would look gay if you did that live. Who wants to go to a gig only to see some one who looks like they're checking their e-mail? Plus, you never know what interesting effects you can get. Some pedals have bends in them that sound like sheets of glass being rubbed together, and so on.
