Fashion DIY tips and gratuitous plugs. And hair. Hair! Flow it, show it. Wait...no. That's some hippie musical. Nevermind. |

Posh goth? What?
I was walking through my local town yesterday. I passed a bunch of yobs, and I heard the most, well, insane description of my style.
They called me a posh goth.
Now, could someone please explain to me what a posh goth is?
I've never heard of it.

They think you're posh 'coz you're not livin' out of the street (or you were just well presented, neat etc.) and you look goth.
There's my explanation.

people have called me a preppy goth before and it really gets on my nerves. They say it is because my style is pretty simple (mostly black vest and button downs and some t shirts and boots, you know) and not all grommets and chains and spikes and all that other hot topic shit. It just irritates me because I am just think, what do you know about me and what I like? Whatever, I usually get over it pretty fast.

I'm still completely in the dark as to what Posh Goth is.
Is it even a style?

Whatever you think it is, you shouldn't take it seriously.

Its just something you shout out at people if you are an idiot.
I wouldn't worry about it, they probably think anyone who isn't dressed as if they think they come from the 'ghetto' is posh, even if in fact they live with mummy and daddy who are rather middle class themselves.

There used to be a Wikipedia article on "Goth Slang" that had archetypes in it, but it was deleted.

I would ignore them, but most likely it was because you have a very neat, well put together look and style.
I have a very similar look, but I get more complements than anything. Dark suits, waistcoats and ties, maybe a derby or boots.
Don't worry so much about what people call you and enjoy the style you have chosen. I pretty much take everything as a complement if possible, and people who are just being an idiot, I ignore. That's all you can really do..

You shouldn't pay any attention to people who yell incoherent comments at you.

Didn't you ever like the Spice Girls? Lol...they kick ass. That's where I first heard the term "posh".

When I was 6 years old, yes.
But then I heard my Dad's Sisters of Mercy tape and fell in love with them.
And Posh Spice was far from what I'd consider Posh.

Maybe you're the poshest Goth they'd seen? Is there a big Goth revival in fashion ATM? I don't keep up with that anymore.

I think "posh" means fancy/proper. And a goth is someone who's darkly inclined.
So I guess they were calling you a 'fanciny non-conformist'? honestly i've never heard that phrase before nor do i really know what posh actually means. But i think it means fancy so maybe you had a victorian style look going on that day or something...
Thats what i got out of it.

I concur with most of the other replies to this thread in that I believe the phrase applied to you refers to a look that is both dark and elegantly tailored.
However, I feel compelled to inquire as to what a 'yob' is. Pray, enlighten me.

Depends on how they said it. To me; it sounds complimentary.
If it was said in another way, then let it slide, don't worry about it.

You realise, Goblin, that to those guys anyone who bathes, brushes their teeth, and does laundry regularly is 'posh'. This only says good things about you.

Posh refers to that women you see who looks too put together, you know you've seen her while walking downtown. She's probably a lawyer or something, drives a small sports car, and requires perfection.
So, they think you're pretty....
pretty rich.

This is my first guess as well.
I also think it might refer to someone that dresses goth, but does it with high fashion designer clothing like Alexander McQueen.
