Anyone attending the October Whitby event?
As one of the older goths, I'm starting the 3 month buildup to my 40th with my first attendance at the Whitby Goth Weekender.
Anyone else planning on going?
So far acts on the bill are
Wayne Hussey (solo set)
Zombina and the Skeletones
Garden of Delights.
+
All the usual gothy madness like the loligoth picnic, the goths v journalist football/soccer match, and the bonfire.

I'm feeling at odds with a lot of this kind of stuff for some reason.
Something about capitalizing on identity as of late. It's bugging me.

You got your accomadation sorted yet?
I had to try really hard to find a bed and breakfast with a single room, or a another at a discounted rate, to get somewhere.
Seems a lot of the regulars book up way in advance, usually they book October when April finishes and vise versa.
I got lucky with a cancellation by a regular because she is saving for her wedding and not going this time.

I will be going as far as I know. I also have a room sorted. I booked it the day I was leaving when I went to the April one just gone.
I will not be doing the ****** picnic, not really my thing, I will be doing the Steampunk meet however. I must lose at least 2 stone immediately....

KontanKarite, the Whitby festival is a long standing tradition where goths have been taking over the town twice a year for over 10 years.

SOD, anyone can go. It really doesn't matter what you listen to or look like. Liking the music is helpful, especially if you intend to buy a ticket for the Spa ( and therefore the bands ) on the evenings, but if not then you could always hang out in the pubs instead. I really only spent time in The little Angel in April, so I want to have a few in the Elsinore and the Resolution in October.

L'oiseau... it is not for everyone, I will certainly say that.
But I would also say that, like certain clubs, it is to be experienced once so that you can at least form an educated opinion on it. And October is definitely the best one to go to, April's never as busy.

I have to admit, whether I get a Spa ticket or not, I'm going, because I love old ruins, the abbey looks stunning, and I want a windswept rugged photo of me on the cliff tops in my big black coat.
Regarding punks, it is getting to be more of a mixed alternative culture festival from what I have heard. Still biased toward it's goth roots, but with bands like the Damned, Doctor and the Medics and Sigue Sigue Sputnik playing in recent years, it isn't strictly black on black anymore 
I'm sure a Mohawk would look stunning with a long flowing cape and velvet shirt

*wimper* I'd love to go, but like Clockwork, I've got a big ocean between myself and England and not enough money to pay my way over there (or anyone I know to go with).  Sometime though. I swear it.

I've been thinking of trying to get an event going locally with a few bands I know, my band, Flaming Seamus and Promethius (power metal I know, but I'm friends with the guys) who knows what can happen.

It is a commercial two day gig festival with large and small bands in a main venue, that grew out of 250 penpals gathering, now the main hall sells out at 1000 capacity. The organiser is still the head of the same team who first met at the original meeting in a pub after an advert.
The second venue used to be included in the main ticket/wristband price, or you could just buy an "overflow" ticket for the second venue, but that has changed as the second venue is used for other events often with charity angles.
Quite a lot of the attendies don't even buy tickets. They go to whitby to spend time with other goths in a town that is very tolerant and gladly accepting of our money. Goths at Whitby is because it was cool to go to Whitby because in Dracula, it is Whitby where he first comes ashore in England.
It is a convention in the sense of a twice annual gathering, but not as centre based as say Convergence. A lot of it is just a place to be seen.
