Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Will my dream ever come true?
Ok so, heres what I want to do.
A couple of friends and I want to turn an old abandoned barn into a venue to play cheap DIY shows at with our bands and other local bands. It would be called The Death Church after the Rudimentary Peni album. That aside, we have questions on how to go about doing this such as how to purchace the land/structure itself, how to power the amps/sound things, or if we can even do this at all. There are certain things that we know that we can/can't do, but any suggestions or tips would be very helpful.

Thanks. As for sound we were thinking of a genorator so we can take it with us when we go. I dunno how that'd work, but I'm sure that someone will once we get a layout of the place. We were thinking of having it so that we could just take everything we brought with us when we leave so we don't have to worry about theft. The barn itself would just be a roof over our heads and a good enclosed area to play shows. It being in a remote area and the fact that we bought it would hopefully ward off the cops.

If you charge an entrance fee, would that count as a commercial use and need some kind of permit or insurance? Just a suggestion of something to check (if you haven't already), I really have no idea on the laws about that in any country. I'm sure a generator could supply enough power if you find the right one, have you tried asking in maybe a large hardware shop or similar? They might be able to give better advice.
Good luck though, I like the sound of this.

I don't think that we'd end up charging anything to get in. It'd be free and public most of the time. Now, if bands or people want to set up tables to sell things inside then they can, but the money would go towards them unless it's one of us using it to better the place in some small way.

Good idea. The fact of it being a rural place would be good to keep the pigs off your ass. Funny thing, seeing as in 1978-79 as the LA punk scene was going, a lot of punk and proto-hardcore punk bands played at a venue called "The Church". God I'm such a nerd.
Anyways, as long as my band can play, I help out anyway possible.

I would recommend renting it first, since you would be a business entity the rent expense would still be tax deductible but far more affordable than if you bought it. Then later if successful you could offer to buy it. This way you don't have a huge financial obligation (including property taxes) hanging over your head if you bought it and then found out you were a flash in the pan. I love your talent and ideas dude, and I don't mean to crush your dreams, but I am just suggesting a realistic alternative with a way out, just in case. But an AWESOME idea man! Be sure to hang a few bats from the ceiling.

I still stand by how awesome that would be. To continue affording it though, wouldn't there have to be a cover? Even if only for maintenance, rent, and various types of insurance.

You'll need money and lots of it.
Perhaps you could get a loan? I dunno if you can get a loan for something like that, though.

Also, it would be incredibly stupid not to have a cover charge. Halfway House does it, so should you.

Kyuss used to play out in the middle of the desert all the time, and they'd use gas generators that you can purchase at any hardware store. So that's always an option.
