Customising my jacket, help?

Ok so I have this kinda military style black wool type jacket/coat.
It looks pretty nice IMO.
But I'm thinking about adding a kinda corset ribbon to the back.

Like this but I don't want it to look tacky.
Has anyone else tried to make a corset ribbon thingy on the back of a jacket before?
If so please can I have some tips on what to use, Where to stitch, How much tension. etc etc bla bla.

I take it that you are doing this more for decorative purposes and not to alter the fit of your jacket?

Well, I dont know how well versed you are in sewing but, here's how'd I approach your project.

You could probably substitute D-rings in for grommets but that'd be more work sewing D-rings in to place. Good luck with your project and if you have any question, feel free to ask! =D

Best Regards,
Neil

I'm gonna try with the D rings.
From your diagram I got this idea

Think it will work?

Yes, it will. It's the same idea just a different method. It will involve more sewing when you have to stitch the individual D-ring straps in place but it will work out the same in the end. But this sounds like a labor of love and something you really want to personalize, so have at it!

Have fun with your project!

I'm not too botherd about how much stitching it will be. I just hope it dont go wrong. But I guess I can just unstitch it if I dont like it.
Thanks for your help though. I'll give that ago if it gets too complicated with the D-rings.

Please do update and post pictures if you can once you're done.. I'm a huge fan of corset lacing and plan to add it to many of the project ideas floating around my head. I'd like to see how it goes for you.
