Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Metro Station?
Is that what they're called? I think that's right. I read somewhere a while ago that they were a "Goth Rock Band" and scribbled a note to sus them out when I thought of it, I never got around to it. Then I was kind of watching Rage this morning and caught a video of theirs, I don't recall what the song was but I don't think they sounded very goth . .

They're more goth than MCR, and the song I just looked up on Youtube is kind of catchy but they look like the typical idiotic-just-hit-18-wannabe band.
I think i heard they were opening for Pink or something..

Errchk . . Pink. Not a fan. Can you tell me, what is goth music actually. I mean in it's most obvious, most raw and original form. Pardon the ignorance but I like a lot of music and I've never really paid much attention to genre so I wouldn't be able to even say whether or not I even like it. Shameful hey? Can you reccommend anything?

Well some people who listen to it on a more regular basis than I might be able to help you. (Why the fuck am I on these forums? )
But these are Goth bands (gothic rock) that I either listen to or have been told about regardless of whether i'm wrong about their genre, they're all pretty good:
Sisters of Mercy
Siouxsie and the Banshees
The Cure
Bauhaus (i'm not sure if it is Bauhaus or The Bauhaus)
Blacklist
Joy Division
The Birthday Massacre (I've heard it called goth, but i'm not sure that's right, but they sound good so who gives a flying fish fuck? )

From the earliest days of gothic rock I can recommend the following: Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Christian Death, Sex Gang Children, Southern Death Cult, and many, many others.
However 'goth music' nowadays has come to refer to a whole slew of other genres including darkwave, deathrock and (much to my dismay) EBM.
Edit: Argh, beaten to it by Sir Canvas Corpsey. So yeah, what he said.

Sweet, thanks guys, I'll give those a listen. I already like The Cure so perhaps there's hope for me yet
So, just to clarify, I have gotten the impression that there's a lot of music that is classified as "goth" but is not "rock music"? That is kind of a question although it ended up badly worded . .
I found trying to pigeonhole music confusing. Probably why I don't do it.

Yeah, a lot of goth has become pretty far separated from guitar-based rock music, if that's what you were asking. Darkwave is genre in which this is rather apparent.

You're a Bowie fan? That's already a promising start in itself. Happy listening.

Ah, thank you, I'm glad you like the boney treasures =]. You just have to create an account on Etsy and you can pay with Paypal or money order. I also sell stuff at markets around Melbourne sometimes.

How so? MCR is slightly dark, and Metro Station isn't dark at all. And neither one is Goth.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Fields of the Nephilim. My favorite.

Metro Station never claimed to be Goth, MCR did at one point.

Just because Metro Station doesn't claim to be Goth doesn't make them any more gothic than MCR.

But MCR claiming to Goth makes them less gothic than Metro Station.
Why do we fight Albert? Shouldn't we be wanking off to the sound of our own voices?
