Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Music to Listen to While High
What music do you listen to while high?
Right now I'm rocking "Black Hole Sun" and it is eating my brain.

I think my music tastes have actually been formed around my weed habit - I don't really like much "heavy" music. Things like punk, metal & deathrock don't do a lot for me. The music I listen to when stoned is pretty much my regular music sans downers like The Fall or Joy Division (except She's Lost Control, which works for any mood) - lots of blues, jazz, southern rock, folk, post-punk & experimental shit. Psych folk has a special place in my heart. I can sometimes be persuaded to listen to a bit of trance, although it's not usually my idea.

And Hawkwind is essential.

Yeah, I like that song. And Hawkwind's a name I've been hearing a lot lately.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHtVeoWeLkI (This is the song I mentioned in my story in lit, and yes, I still have the drawings.) This whole album is immense if you're a stoner with psychfolk leanings. They wrote and recorded the whole thing in a weekend, and the only way you can tell is 'cause he keeps cracking up where they're obvously having so much fun making but don't have time to re-take. I love those parts, especially since he never, EVER misses a beat - just when it sounds like the song's about to come apart, he gets in back on track. I love music that sounds alive like that. Probably why Dylan's Rainy Day Women is also a favourite.

The Cure's Disintegration album. At least Plainsong!
I first heard the album when I was 17 and I didn't start smoking pot until I was like 19, but even then I knew, if I ever tried it, I had to listen to that album. And I did and it was magical.

Pitman & Ween are some good stoner choices. Disintegration, very much yes. Black Monk Time is another popular one with me.

Rammstein
The first 4 Black Sabbath albums
Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli
Bauhaus
These are my most common, I also slip in some cypress hill from time to time, for the novelty of it mostly.

I'm always a fan of doom/stoner metal as well as shit like Black Moth Super Rainbow, Buckethead's Colma album, Gojira, Neurosis and God Is An Astronaut when I'm high. That's a pretty eclectic list but it's all so goooood.

Had a feeling that Mr.Doobie started this thread... And though I don't actually smoke marijuana, love to mix music with my anti-depressants and psycho-stimulants. Been trying to cut back due to teeth grinding but as for music- Agree 100% on Disintegration and will add to the mix alien sex fiend. Found myself semi-consciously gyrating to the drum beat for the song "mind full of maggots" the other day. Very sexual.

When I'm with my boyfriend its usually The Cure or Deftones, maybe some Blue October or TOOL.
When I'm with my friend Missy, it can be absolutely anything.
One time we listened to Lady Gaga... What a trip. The video went on for ages and we were so confused about the music. Haha

Anything that you usually like... I usually tend to be more open to new bands and songs, but the music I really enjoy is the music I listen to sober while sober.

Believe it or not, my screen name has nothing to do with marijuana, and I've been using it on the internet longer than I've been a stoner.
But yeah, Sinjob, Sleep is amazing while high. I would also suggest High on Fire and Candlemass. "Solitude" blew my friggen' mind.
Jefferson Airplane is also excellent. Their guitar is perfect for mind altered states.
The Mars Volta is also amazing while high, and I would also suggest listening to them while on acid, because that's just... ffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Check out Ultimate Spinach, they're one of the craziest 60s psych bands.

Meh, never much liked them. They always felt a bit... soggy (why does it feel weird to describe a band with "spinach" in their name as soggy?).
Listening to Motorhead while high or on acid (especially acid) makes you want to beat someone to death with a sockful of nickels (which could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending). Though that could just be me, I get noticeably more excitable while on mind altering substances.

Throbbing Gristle always gave me bad trips. Skinny Puppy/OhGr are a good time in the sky, but that's because of Ogre being one of the biggest stoners in music...imagine how awesome it'd be to smoke with him. He'd make funny noises.
Velvet Underground, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Neil Young, and Spacemen 3. Booyah.

Blazing blueberry kush as we speak! And today the playlist is Johhny Clegg/Juluka/Savuka, and assorted reggae. I was a hateful bastard today, and am trying to push back the tides.

I tend to gravitate toward electronic music, but also more.. soundscape kinds of music. Gaga is great too.
