Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL.

The Feeling of Music

So, I'm not sure whether this should be in that little ranting section, called whatever it is called, or here.

But I'm going to choose here.
Because it has to deal with music.

A couple of days ago, I was happily reading out of my history book, so I could fake having knowledge on the cold war. At least, knowledge that would let me pass the exam. Which turned out to be names, and not relevant information on the Cold War.

Like many teenagers, I have my iPod glued to my hip. I love my music, and I saved up as much money as I could possibly muster, just to get the 4GB piece of crap. I have kicked it around, I have sat on it, used it as night light, licked it, chewed on it, used it as a drumstick, etc.

My music is moderately blaring in my head, just loud enough that I can hear it, but no one else can, because I'll respect people's ability to study, and I don't want to interfer.

Time counts down.

Ring! Class is over, and I slam my book shut. As the ritual follows, I turn up the volume to fully enjoy the screaming of Barney (The singer). I am in bliss.
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIRUzqHTNh8 - That's what I was listening too, for reference).

Then, the kid next to me goes, "Metal sucks, it's so simple". Now, being someone who has been a metalhead for a good portion of his life, I have come to love metal, in all forms.

Yet, appearantly to his kid, all metal sounds the exact same.

To me, that's an idiot statement. Almost all metal sounds different. Cellador is vastly different then Napalm Death, and Cannibal Corpse sounds nothing like Kreator.

But to him, not only was metal all the same, but it was simple.

Simple? Jesus. I can barely grasp how to play a guitar (and playing it that fast is out there), and he's calling it simple.

It makes no sense to me.
I enjoy metal, just like I enjoy other types of music (From electronic, to classical, to some rap). The reason why I enjoy it, is simple. It puts me in a different mood, makes me hyper or calm etc. The lyrics make me think. (When I can understand them). It just makes me feel happy, and more reflective.

So the question I have for you is, what feelings do you get from music? Any type of genre will do. More so, why do you prefer any specific type of music? When did you start listening to that type of music? Who introduced you, if anyone did?

Obviously the kid never listened to Metallica. Such diversity. Tell him to watch their 2 of 1 video, and then ask him if it is still simple.

I get as many feelings from different kinds of music as there are different emotions.

My preference changes with mood and age, but I would say the past year my preference has been for music that has tri-tones at it's heart.

I can only generally say I started listening to this kind of music in the late '70s, the music was introduced to me by friends. I have listened to it on and off, but the past year it seems to be a basic staple of my listening diet.

Splintered: You have one dumb ass classmate. Music is my salvation. Ask him to play any of the riffs and we'll see just how simple he thinks it is then.

I agree.

Metal is not simple. In fact, it's influenced heavily by classical music. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously hasn't listened to much metal nor have they ever picked up a guitar, bass, or sat down at a drumset or synth and tried to play any of it.

I've played guitar for 10 years (though I recently had to sell mine out of monetary crisis), and music is what gets me through the day. No matter the genre, I have respect for the musicians that bring me the sweet, sweet music that rings through my ears for several hours a day. My iPod never leaves my sight, or my side for that matter.

My top 2 favorite genres would have to be Old-school Punk (Dead Kennedys, MDC, etc.) and Goth rock. They provide the perfect range of emotions for me. And believe me, I make quite the emotional connection with my music.

I listen to just about anything, though; it all depends on my mood.

John Cage's 4'33" is very simple, even if you can't play an instrument you can play it.

If I didn't have my music, I'd die- no exaggeration. Music helps me absorb everything around me, relax, and function. If it were possible, I'd go through the whole school day listening to music. Granted, I'd break out in dance a few times but music helps me with everything. I love it.
