You know I just realized, we should add "what's your age" to the questionnaire.
Sylvia, you seem a bit misguided right now, but I guess that's what we're here for. Welcome.

Good goth...let me just say this: you seem very nice, hopefully we'll educate you more on goth culture. Now Now, I did not say you don't know about it-though seeing your musical tastes you don't seem to have much of a large...
g'oh I've said this millions of times. I am going to ask you this: Name 3 Gothic rock bands.

Well, skateboarding is clichéd, and My Chemical Romance is one of the worst famous bands of these times (and who lost even more points than thought possible when Gerard Way had the balls to believe he has a voice on what's 'goth')
But you're cool. I've always wanted to meet a girl that would play Vader's song.

Way: Well, I think the Smiths are goth, because they seem sad... yet happy!
Murphy: *sighs, rolls eyes, slumps over*
That may have been the funniest moment in goth-related TV history.

Guys, some serious LAWLS are going to be shouted here in large capital letters like in Godslayer Jillian's literature threads, but to be quite honest I think skateboarders are over-cliched. Every kid who claims to be 'punk' because they have sneakers with little stars on them and want to be like Tony Fucking HAWK. Or wait, now it's Bam Magera. Yes, I agree with Jillian, just seeing Gerard Way consider his band goth, knowing he's not fooling anyone. How dare he. But anyway...
Gothic Bands. 3. Name 'em. Now.

I can't call myself goth, my taste in music is...crazy. My collection of CD's ranges from Cher to Bach to Reba to Green Day. Saying I'm eclectic is putting it mildly. So, yeah, before I get bashed about not being goth, I'll come straight out and say I'm really not. I'm interested in goth stuff, about as much as anything else. My wardrobe is a lot like my CD collection. I'll just say, my artwork is depressing and dark, as is my writing, and I've always loved a good vampire novel. I've got a strange way of going from listening to Frank Sinatra and wearing pink and white one day, to being decked in black and listening to My Chemical Romance (yeah, apparently you guys don't like that band, but I love 'em) the next. AS for skateboarding, well I don't associate that with being goth, or whatever, it's just something I like to do, criticize me if ya want.

Good goth. The one that ryhms with teh 'Hair?' Eew.
Green day? Meh Meh Meh Wap Wap Wap Wap. Also, at least you're modest because seeing you have a low knowledge of what goth is, I wouldn't suggest you actually being intelleuctally stating a remark of self-awareness. But you're too simple minded for that.

G'okay...we don't really care. I'm goth, Maggot is not. If anything, saying what you aren't in that offense does not spawn our indulgence. It just makes so go 'MOCK LOU!' Goodness...

Goth stuff rules. FTW. Your wardrobe is filled with CDs? No wonder you are just plainly ever so-unorganised.

I have no idea how some kids can like skateboarding when all you basically do is fall on your butt. Bleahhh, I hate getting hurt. In my P.O.V. they're not even fun to play with .
Anyway, welcome I guess.

If you don't claim to be goth, then maybe you're not so misguided.
Sometimes I think we're too hard on n00bs here...
and that's why I try to let them down softly. Baby bats are more likely to listen to someone that isn't insulting them.

I won't criticize you. Everything you mentioned virtually is on a ratio of 1:1 on things I like and things I don't.
I don't need for you to be a goth to stay here, but forgive me if I try to change your musical tastes a little bit.
The thing I really didn't like is the 'my artwork is depressing and dark, as is my writing'.
Depressing and dark writings are stupid. There's no point in them. They don't make me any wiser nor entertain me. Of course, they would entertain me... if I was like most persons in the world that love to keep being existential masochists.
Ok, I'm sorry, I'm beginning to criticize, but I do have to tell you: if you write, write something worth reading.

My turn!
First off- I don't like you. Luckily you have a chance to change that.
Second- MCR is CRAP (maybe 2 songs tolerable- maybe?)
Third- NOBODY SAID you HAD to be "Goth" to be a part of our wonderful board, but if you're young and new, then you DO need to be open to knowledge.
Moving on....
The answers to your questionaire sucked, you're 16- STILL a little kid, there's nothing wrong with skateboarding (I used to aggro inline), Google CANNOT teach you about goth, but we can.
Cher is the devil, never mention her again.
Depressing and 'dark' writings? Not goth- try "EMO" (especially considering your age *cough*)
Who doesn't love a good vampire book?
And if you have ever thought for even TWO SECONDS that MCR is 'goth'......GET OUT!
*Honesty over*
(Sometimes I think...maybe I am TOO honest.)

It's actually just because MOST vampire books suck
But the good ones Are amazing lol Just keep looking
and btw, welcome. I'm not going to critisize you or anything... By the looks of what I've read, I do not see you as a goth, but that doesn't make you a bad person xp . Just know you have a lot to learn... Actually I shouldn't be talking - I'm only 15. I'm still learning =p

Alright, first of all, I doubt my musical taste will change much, Cher is great! ^_^ "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves", good stuff, good stuff. I'm not Emo, I actually struggle with depression, the dark writing and pictures along with my meds is what keeps me from going Emo. I'd like you guys to enlighten me on the word goth, since it seems I know so little about it. What is "goth" to you? What kind of musical groups are "goth"? You've been telling me what isn't, now I'd like to know what is?

It's easier to define goth by what it isn't than by what it is.
In its core, it's a musical style.
Some people will say it's a philosophy, some will say it's a way of life, and all that jazz. But saying that Goth is anything else than music would limit our individuality.
If it were a philosophy, then we wouldn't be having our own perspective on reality; we'd be having t3h g0thzorz one.
Anyway, goth is just about music, and everything else is an aggregate.
Some aggregates would be the clothing, as it is the easiest most obvious way to represent oneself to anyone without even talking.
Then there's the fact that we tend to read a lot. This is because we're very arrogant, and the smart ones pressure the dumb ones to become smart by pure elitism. Sounds bad, but it's an effective way to fight illiteracy.
And then there's something about the dark. Most will say we find beauty in dark. I prefer bright days (if there are clouds) to night, but still I acknowledge we get off with dark things.
Now, there's a difference between dark and gore. For some reason many people believe we are violent and love viscera. But what's so dark about blood? In my opinion anyone that says he likes to drink blood is a vampire wannabe and needs a reality bitchslap.
Ok, I have written too much and said too little. Now I'll try to rescue this post by naming some gothic bands (or bands that goths listen to [there's a difference])
Bauhaus
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Sex Gang Children
Specimen
Alien Sex Fiend
Cinema Strange (deathrock)
Christian Death (deathrock)
The Cruxshadows (darkwave)
Dead Can Dance (darkwave)
London After Midnight (deathrock in earlier times but now mostly darkwave)
Add to that list about other forty bands that we could name but then you'd get bored and wouldn't even try to look for all that; I sure as hell wouldn't.
Damn, it's so much easier to answer questions little by little than to try to explain my entire existence in 10 centimeters of text.

Alright, I have already gotten the feeling, that I'm generally, I don't know, "looked down on" here, but I'm liking the kind of "goth" you guys are describing better than what I've known in my little suburban town in PA. The people here seem generally alright to, despite the harsh welcome. I'm gonna look into the "old goth" music, I've always preferred old stuff when it comes to just about anything.

The original goth sound perfectly fit its previous name of positive punk. Look for Siouxsie, Bauhaus, and Specimen first and you'll see what I mean.
If you're having a hard time finding them, I reccomend you to use Soulseek if you have Ares or Limewire. Soulseek is much better to find non-mainstream bands.
