Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

John 5
Please tell me that someone else has heard his music. This guy is a fucing god among guitarists. He's thrown in and out of the goth category because he used to play for Manson. I think he's pretty cool and he "admits" to goth, but that's not what this is about. Yeah. He has some of the most original and amazing compositions out there today. His new album "The Devil Knows My Name" is awesome. It's subject matter is about serial killers and shit. The thing is it's instrumental.

Yay! I was so excited to see this thread. I'm a huge fan of John 5. I've got all 3 of his albums and they're some of my favorite CDs. He's got an insane talent with a guitar. I love him to death.
He's the current guitarist in Rob Zombie as of now, I'm not a huge fan of them but John being in the band makes them okay in my opinion.

Good guitarist, but not goth. I'm not even sure if he's goth-ic. I know Manson sure as hell isn't. What an arrogant, self-worshipping, stupid jerkoff.

Good goth, amen Drac. Amen. I guess he's okay, John5, but I seriously must say I don't like a thread dedicated to him. Perhaps post-darkwave shoegazer perhaps. But Mick Mercer once said Darkwave is just a term for goth bands hiding the fact they're goth, also so they don't get accused of being a Sister/Neff copykat.

This is a music thread about a good guitarist. Not how goth or non goth he is. If that truly matters to you then you need to find something to do with your time.

Granted, but there's also a Manson thread. He's a good guitarist, but not everyone here has heard his music not to mention the opinions expressed against him and his work. Guess it just does not matter.

You brought up how he "admits to goth". If that's true, my defense was justified. It's like if Avril fuckin' Lavigne called herself a punk. John 5 may look the part, but if he's not playing any goth music, he's just a spooky Ken doll.

You're wrong dumbass. I said he admits to it, not that he was. That was a snippit of the information. If you really want to argue, fine. Goth isn't just old goth rock and club music. Deal with it. Manson and John 5 are two different people. My thread is about John 5's music, not his gothness or whatever. Fuck off.

Maybe you need to write clearer messages. "He admits to goth" sounds an awful lot like "he admits to being goth". What else could it mean?
And Count, you seem to be quite the hypocrite. On one hand, you take offense if I call Slipknot death metal, but on the other hand, you think it's wrong for me to take offense when you call AFI goth. Either that, or you're just in denial. Whatever.

Never called AFI goth kiddo. I just said that they don't suck and I stood by it. Anyway. I'm off this. Grow up. I'm not trying to be an ass, this just isn't what the thread is about.

Great. Seconding DeathChii I would not reccomend flaming Drac. Mainly because both of you are musicians and we should not look down upon each other as if one is more educated on music then the other. Hopefully it won't be threadjaked.

In denial till the end, huh? Oh, well. Fuck it. The ignorance of outsiders has no effect on the scene. Guys, stop me if I ever try to argue with a baby bat again. Moving on...

This is what we're astraying away from, and don't call me a baby bat again. I've been in for five years strong. This site doesn't defne me.

Yeah I just got The Devil Know My Name by John 5, amazing album.
As far as all this labeling shite is going, can't we all just get along? Who gives a rats ass what label someone fits into, it's music. John 5 is himself, a musician, a celebrity, an artist. Accept and embrace, or just don't listen.

Actually one of my favourite bands! But I've only got their first album, which is supposedly their best, the original vocalist they had was magnificent with a beautiful voice. Shame she left, they went a bit downhill after that.

From the teaser, I can assess that John 5 is like a member of Sunn O))) meets Someone Good, just not as good and too repetitive with too many effects pedals.

I heard some of their jams. They're pretty good. On that note. John 5 actually neglected the exstensive use of effects pedals and crap. He said he did more playing on this album. Kinda cool eh?

The number of years you've been "in" doesn't mean the difference between being a baby bat or not. And whether you like it or not, newer-generation "goths" can't just change what the genre is from one day to the next.
If you believe that, you'd have to believe that Slipknot is death metal, because there are a lot of modern "metalheads" who do think they are.
And don't start with all this "goth's a mindset" crap, because it's just retarded. It started as goddamn musical genre and has followers with a common (but not required) mindset. Goth has its harmony with darkness, just like metal has its brutality and morbidity, and punk has its anti-establishment sensibility. But can a brutal and morbid-minded person be a metalhead without listening to metal? Hell no. Same goes with goth. I don't even have a problem with your opinions anymore, but what's pissing me off is your sheer hypocrisy. I've said what needs to be said.
