Music Question

Since My Chem is obviously not good enough for me, a goth, to listen to...is NIN better?

Better, but not great. Keep trying.

Though, of course, you as a goth can listen to whatever the hell you want. Just don't claim it's goth because you listen, yes?

You really should learn about genres of music first, before randomly picking out names that you've heard in conversation. There's a HUGE difference between MCR and NIN musically. Even if they were scene-appropriate - if you liked one, there would be no way to know whether you liked the other.

...

Why don't you just listen to what you like instead of forcing yourself into some mold for individuality?

If you are asking questions like this you really shouldn't be labeling yourself a goth.

There's this thing, it's called wikipedia. It's not 100% accurate but it's better to ask about shit you've read on there than to ask questions about your baseless assumptions about the goth scene. Also, there's this thing called google, you might have heard of it. In the time it took you to log in here and post, you could have googled "goth 101" and actually learned a bit about goth music instead of wasting our time.

Music is food.

Goth is a diet. And a wheat-gluten-lactose intolerant one at that.

There – my profound revelation. Shit, I just had a piece of chocolate. MORTAL SIN!!!! There go all my gothiness out the window.

(Or maybe I just spent too much time reading other comments on the music thread about everything that is 'oh-SO-NOT-goth'.)

It pisses me off that you are depending on others to tell you if you should like milk or not. Drink milk if you like it, don't drink it if you don't! Would it increase your enjoyment or reinforce your dislike if you knew its composition? ie. - do you like a certain band more because everyone else says they're Goth?

Sounds like you've lost your appetite for MCR because they're not a Goth band - which is pretty lame.

Can't you choose for yourself what you like and dislike?
But hey, whatever - go starve yourself.

Its not like you can't listen to one and not the other. If you want to listen to goth bands then just do some research. Or look around the threads on this site. Almost every member has listed thier favorite goth bands more than once. That could be a start.

i wasn't asking because i want to be all like "gother than thou." It's just I met this girl the other day who said she was going to beat the goth right outta me because i didn't listen to good enough music...so to avoid a conflict, in which I will surely win causeing her to look afool, i was simply trying to pick out of the music I have readily available. So, is NIN goth enough? Everyone tells me that many goth's identify with NIN. Will this work?

Now you're sounding like a troll. NIN is not goth. Did you see it on anybody's list they gave you? No? That's because they're not goth.

Sheesh, I could teach a first grader what goth is in less time.

Well, what is goth music exactly? Mournful, insightful lyrics, or wailing guitar solos? I'm pretty sure no one knows for sure. I don't think either NIN or MCR are goth, but I still love MCR. Just because music isn't goth doesn't mean you can't listen to it--it's not like you'll get struck by a bolt of lightning if you do. It depends on whether you think it's goth or not.
