Oh yeah, Converse has been owned by Nike since 2003. That's why I doubt a lot of punks' and "alternatives'" commitments to anti-establishment.

I'm not sure if my converse shoes actually predate the buy out. Their marketing schemes makes me want to fight back the bile.

I buy Converse knock-offs. The same great look, without that pesky "We hire children in third world countries at unfair wage" thing.

I don't know about those in particular but most if not all fake's of a brand are also made at unfair wages.

Actually, a lot of them are just made cheaply in Britain (or at least, that's how it works in Britain).

My pair is 3-4 years old. Currently they've got Gir shoelaces in them and they got bleach splattered along the side of them. They've been more neglected lately, as they've been traded for knee-high boots.

Fuck my life. My converse are definitely not older than 2003. Now I feel like a dirtbag.

Ah, don't. I seriously didn't know about them being owned by Nike until I read this. I'm not going to love my Converse any less than I did before though. Sure, they kinda just generally suck with marketing towards the, what was it, "optimistic rebel"? What the crap? Oh well, I love my black Chucks.

I have my black chuck taylors. I've worn through several pairs now. I had no idea Nike had bought them out. The main reason I like them is because A: I can get solid black shoes that go with everything, from jeans to skirts to ripped shorts with tights to.... whatever, B: I have extremely long, narrow feet. I can easily lace them tight enough to be comfortable.
It sucks they got bought out.
But hey, now there is a premium value on the older ones, no?
Makes that "vintage" pair in I-Robot all the more ironically comical.

I've never owned a pair of converse in my life, infact, I haven't even worn trainers for years, I hate them...lol.
It is quite bizarre that Nike own converse. Bizarre, but in this day and age, not suprising.

Great. Now I've images in my head of modern Brits harkening back to their Dickensian heritage & assembling knock-off Chucks for 50¢ an hour. God they're even wearing finger-less gloves & shoddy top hats in my mental images
I bought my only pair only a few years ago. I had to wait 30 frakkin years to get a pair as we grew up in the 70s pretty broke. Great shoe but, with my archless feet, they're painful to wear after a while without supports.

I don't wear converse, and I almost never buy *new* shoes or clothing- with the exception of handmade clothing like corsets and latex gear, where I can actually talk to the people who made it.
I get everything except underwear from charity shops and friends who are clearing out their wardrobes. And now I'm glad- while whatever I have may originally have been from a slave-labour brand, when I purchase it I put money towards a worthy cause instead.

I'm probably the only person in my area who doesn't own a pair of converse. I've had the same pair of boots for three years, and they pwn all converse. I wanted a pair a few years back, but then, I saw how many people had them and I changed my mind.

I have really low arches so Converse aren't really an option for me *shrug*

Yeah and Liz Claiborne jackets are like so pretty!
Who cares that the workers got paid seventy-four cents for one that costs $178, it doesn't affect me right?

It's an alright brand, though I tend to get a little "bleh" whenever I see so many people wearing chucks in one day.

The thing about chucks is this:
I find them to be utterly repulsive pieces of footwear, and yet I own about four pairs. Allow me to explain:
When I was young I hated being very tall (i'm an inch shy of 6 feet), and the only shoes I could really find that were FLAT were these, so I bought them and refused to wear anything else. Problem is, once I get into a set fashion habit, it's impossible for me to break away because when you're used to wearing the same things every day all other stuff looks odd.
Hence, I am still wearing these unbearably hideous shoes for lack of something better. Worse, they're not NEW. They're old and holey and brown and the paint stuff on the metal air holes is all chipped off...
I bought a pair of plain black demonia flats but those shoes are....

Mine predate!
I love how comfy they are; I can usually only wear mocs with soft soles, so.. yeahh.
I DIYed mine last night (well, I added to them). I put a Bauhaus face thing on the left toe, and the lyrics to Bela Lugosi's Dead on the right. They already had red paint on them, and I had cut black satin ribbon to use as laces. ^__^

Yeah, I've known all of that for a while. I kind of said "fuck you" to converse after they made the "One Star" model for Target. I don't wear all-stars, but most of what I do wear right now are Converse Slip-Ons, and Adidas. I recently purchased some boots (by Robert Wayne) but I was saddened to find out that they were made in China.
You know, here's a question I've had for a while. If it is made in China, it's not made in a 'sweat-shop', correct?
It seems impossible, though, to purchase things made in a country that isn't slave-labour. I mean, the only places I know are Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, but they're both outrageously expensive.
