Woot swapping the eyeliner pencil for an eyeliner crayon did the trick, and the crayons that I own have the added benefit of superior staying power, unfortunately that makes them much harder to get off, especially when I was only doing a makeup trial and wanted it off of my face about 5 minutes after I put it there.
