Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

o.o Eepers... The 69 Eyes are a pretty good band, and even if a band is crap there really is no reason to speak as such about them...

God, I agree! They've even done that to bands I don't like, but it's still disrespectful. Hopefully the goth article won't be sabtogued...Bauhaus has been safe...
My solution-put someone responsible for Wikipedia...

God...that Ziggy Stardust cover was...WOW. I'm also not too fond of AFI covering real goth bands songs like the cure's Hanging Garden and Just like Heaven. What's next...hopefully not Misfits or Christian Death...

As Cicero has noted, AFI has covered The Misfits a good number of times. The ones that pop into my head at this moment are "Halloween" and "Last Caress". There are a few more but I'm too lazy to look them up and list them.
I may sound biased since I am a fan of AFI but I would like to point out at least their covers of The Cure are somewhat decent compared to 311's version of "Lovesong". Ouch.
... Anyone remember when Robert Smith said The Cure wasn't goth? That was ironic.

Granted, though Smiths claim has been disputed, yes the Cure was a goth band, but moved toward the 'depressive pop' area after they were given that title.

Guess I spoke too soon.
Oh yes, 311's lovesong is unspeakably awful.

Wow, I had no idea AFI had covered Ziggy Stardust. Not their smartest move. Davey Havok is so much better suited for high energy performances... seeing them do an acoustic version just isn't right. It wasn't necessarily an awful job though - I think I smell a bit of "Oh no! They're not goth! Pretend to hate it, pretend to hate it!".
But their previous covers have been downright awesome. The Hanging Garden, Halloween, Just Like Heaven, Jack the Ripper, etc.

Though I wouldn't call them awesome, but the others are decent. I don't really hate AFI, though I do think they're a bad band to be labeled goth; influences or not, their sound projects pop punk, as the old work is hardcore. Dead Kennedys would be a more reasonable influence then the other goth/horrorpunk bands they've cited.

I saw AFI play last night
It was a good performance, not their best but still, I liked it all the same. They did the Ziggy cover, but I don't know the song very well anyway so I can't comment on wether it was good or bad.
My throat is really sore from singing full volume * pops lozenge in * and my hips are killing from being crushed into the barrier, but it was worth it

Incidentally, has anyone here heard Davey and Jades' side project Blaq audio?
The song Bitter for sweet reminds me of Apoptygma bezerk, what with all the synthesysers ad so on.
I like this song. I don't usually go for music ike this, but This seems different somehow , no not just because it's them. Yet again I am stuck for a decent description, but I do know it puts the shivers up my spine.
I know many will hate it, but here's a link anyway so you know what I'm on about.

I'm really looking forward to Blaqk Audio. In my humble opinon, Davey's voice matches well with electronica/synths/etc. I hope Jade and he play live with this project in the future.

I don't much care for AFI, if I wanted to hear whining I'd listen to something listenable such as NIN's The Downward Spiral or The Fragile...

I'm a fan of the original AFI sound, back in the late '90s, and I've never considered them goth. I've always thought of them as punk. Unfortunately, they've been attacked by the mainstrain corruption in the past few years, so I'm not so sure 'punk' applies now.
