Party planning

So, the headmaster at my school wants a fall party--and a good one too, one that will be remembered. He asked the teachers to come up with a party-planning-committee. Yours truely landed in it. I am stuck with several nerds (in a good way) who are having some trouble with coming up with ideas that will have all the other students active at the party.
I'm having trouble passing off ideas to these lovely guys. I really need some very convincing/splendiferous/conservative-with-slightly-liberal-tendencies ideas. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please do tell. I would greatly appreciate it.

I agree, Masquerades kicks fucking ass.
Otherwise, try something with a proper snacktable and good punch, victorian themed perhaps.

They told me about a day ago that they thought 'Italy through the Ages' was fitting, as they want a party to tie in with the curriculum :|
Masquerade would work for 'Italy through the Ages' though.
