USA and Britain to launch attacks on Syria
Not sure if I should have posted this in politics or spooky news. It kind of falls into both...
It was in the news this morning. USA's President Barack Obama and UK's Prime Minister David Cameron held a 40 minute phone call last night discussing what action they should take in response to the barbaric chemical attacks on Syria's people.
The conclusion? Launch missiles.
The pair decided to launch a missile attack, clearly forgetting that one of Syria's allies was, in fact, Russia, who have an arsenal of Nuclear Weapons.
All details are in the following link:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...s-8784435.html
Thoughts on this?
Is it a good idea for the USA and Britain to launch these missiles?
I, personally, think not. I believe it will cause a lot more trouble than what we are prepared for.

Clearly overreacting. We've been to war with multiple allies of Russia (Iraq, Yugoslavia) since the Cold War concluded just as they've messed with many of our allies that they're neighbors with (Ukraine, Georgia) and in the end the only thing either country does is talk a lot of trash and do nothing.

And not to forget that Mutual Assured Destruction is an evil but kinda beautiful thing? Even at the height of the Cold War, both sides understand what open war with each other would mean.

True. The scarier situation is Pakistan and India. Two countries that have had direct conflict with dozens, if not hundreds of nuclear warheads pointed at each other. Think I'll have to look up if they have a mutual destruction agreement or not.

So, the thing in Syria is fucked because Russia might respond?
How about the thing in Syria being fucked because of what's happening to the people in Syria?

DAE notice that every time the US wants to intervene somewhere, the standing government of that other place is a regime and their tactics are "barbaric"?

Pretty much. We live in the only country to have ever used nuclear weapons, we had detention camps for our own citizens, slavery, intentionally sterilized racial minorities, and have mass-murdered our own citizens on many occasions. To say nothing about the more subtle shit. It's really annoying when people pretend that we have better standards, if there is such a thing.

Genocide and exploitation of the native people, torture and inhumane treatment of enemies; Way better then chemical weapons.

Heh, I'm taking a history course this year on WWI and just had my first class, and we talked a bit about chemical warfare. The Geneva Protocol banned it, but the US didn't sign it until the 1970s, after using napalm and Agent Orange in Vietnam, and the US still supported Saddam Hussein and his use of chemical warfare in the Iraq-Iran War. Professor made a point that while after WWI it was considered distasteful to use it against other Western powers (it wasn't used in combat in WWII), the West had no problem using it against non-Western countries.
