No, but seriously, I didn't mean 'allowed' as in 'I give you permission to'. I meant that everyone's entitled to their opinion, and I'm entitled to disagree with them.

Mayhap you're being a bit over-sensitive?

Just used to people being "allowed" to like certain things here, and find it to be the condescending elitism of people that have nothign else but aforesaid self aggrandized elitism.

I hate her too. Her writing is terrible. As a dark fantasy writer with, talent, so I think and have been told, I am bothered to no end that her poor excuse for writing nets a movie deal, while my stuff, which is intillgent, would probably only be published in underground communities. Granted, I would rather have my respect in such establishments, rather than in the mainstream world. However, I am tempted to churn out the crap she does just to make some money. She must be loaded with cash right now. Damn her. And damn people who buy complete dribble, even if they someday buy it from me.

I had my first non-online brush with Twilight today!!

I was talking to some third years (aged 13-14) and one of said group had recently purchased the epic literary genius most commonly known as 'Sugar' magazine.

As one of this week's freebies; tucked into the 'Lad Mag' was a taster of the new twilight book (Oh Em Gee!!!!). The girls discussed how the actor playing *insert male character name* in the new Twilight film 'Didn't look right as *name*'. The girls were distracted......

What's this?

A copy of an A4 poster of the Jonas Brothers?!?!?

Say no more.

Suffice to say I'm SO going to get this when it comes out.

Finally other beings that agree with me.
Its just so awful. Yes thats the word.
I just hate how in general vampires have become the whores of the teen fiction genre.
My friend is always shushing me when i start yelling about these things in borders.
I got into this whole trist with some girl in a hollister t-shirt about how if she wanted to read something about vampires go read lost souls because what she had was shit. She just glared at me.
If you want vampires go read Anne Rice or Bram Stoker and find some real god damned vampires already!

I think many would dispute that Anne Rice doesn't have real vampires either

Vampires are the worst mythological creatures. Not necessarily because of their qualities, but because of what they've been featured in. Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, Stephanie Meyer, the wet dreams of mallgoths, they've not been well-represented.

Close, but the worst mythological creature is actually the Kappa, a water demon from Japanese folklore that perishes when the bowl on its head is emptied of the liquid contained therein, and which also happens to be bound by a strict honor code that forces it to reciprocate whenever greeted with a bow.

Ok, true. They do take on the more sensitive route in Anne Rice novels which is something i do guiltily savor. I am a female after all.
But its basically the outright shittiness of the teen fiction works that include vampires. They really dont have much girth to them.
The characters are hardly deep there only problems being alienation and whether to bite some teenage girl.
No deep moral conflict and tug-of-war because the author doesnt seem to want to create moral conflict with their readers own views.
Im just sad that some better writing and plots cant be lent to rather interesting creatures.
I need to stop my ranting. It doesnt make me look very good. =/

Well, it doesn't take much for a movie to be made these days, actually. I guess all we can hope for is that it will turn out to be really bad on the big screen, and hope it loses money instead of making it.

Don't even comapre Anne Rice and Bram Stoker. Have you even picked up a copy of Dracula? Stoker had talent. Dracula was actually a book highly critical of the Victorian Age. There was a lot of thought behind it, and it captured the fears that people really had. Not of vampires, but of the world so drastically changing through technology. It wasn't just a bunch of dribble. The type of stuff Rice writes. And the vampires in that book are actually interesting. Plus, I've never seen a mall Goth with a copy of Dracula. They're all about Rice.

To be fair, Dracula was also pretty boring. The book in retrospective is not that bad, but it's like knitting a pair of socks: it's boring while you're doing it, it gives you a very crappy result, but at least you can say "hey, I knitted a pair of socks, cool."

Ive read Dracula so many times sometimes i feel like i lived it myself. And it is true that they are on totally different literary levels. But Dracula was the first book of its kind. Its impact runs deeper than most. But at least the rich moods created by Rice could completely scorch whats in the teen fiction section.

No, Dracula is a rip off of The Vampyr and various other literature and also a bastardization of Romanian folklore.

Dracula was really dry at times, could throw the book at the wall when reading whatever dribble Lucy thought (god I hated Lucy), but when it gets into the horror I found it creepy. All in all one of my favourite books.

There's just something about Rice I don't like. I liked the movie Interview With A Vampire, but I didn't like the book. Seemed so dreary and she tried to romanticize the vampire myth, I think. I just don't like her style of writing, its like she's trying too hard.

I've no idea, but it predates Dracula by a good long time, published in 1819.

It's shit. Seriously, as a piece of literature it's worse than Dracula.

The books 'written' by Lestat were a lot easier to read. More colorful and flamboyant and all. I would dislike Interview the book a lot more, except that it got me reading again.

Carmilla also predates Dracula, and it has lesbians.
