I'd have to agree with you, it's just plain silly to look at, or revolting, depending on the person wearing it.
I prefer a dark red, unless someone is completely clueless and doesn't know how to apply it, in which case I'd advise them to step away from the makeup.

I quite skipping class ages ago, I was struck down with a malignant virus that enjoys making buzzing noises in my head.
I was also told that I'm overly stressed and I need some time off by my guidance counselor.

wow this thread has gone a long way, and still majority says it looks fabulous
ive seen it look terrible, and ive seen it on emo kids
so im gonna say, it looks bad on everyone, all the time, even on the right person with the right outfit, the black lips are over doing it and tacky
there are so many attractive ways to look "goth" and that isnt one of them, unless you wanna look "scary" knock yourselves out i guess

Black lipstick can work well if you use it as a gloss over something like a dark plum or a nice blood red.

I'm not an avid wearer of black lipstick (it's bright red in my case), but I've seen it look great on some people. It really just depends on a whole bunch of other factors, like confidence, and what the person is wearing.
I wrote about it in my ahem, "blog", a while back, just to set people on the right track about making it look right, and not like they've been chewing on an ink pen.
