Almost everyone in my school hates "goth" without knowing what it is. Most of the people who don't hate the subculture believe they are goth. How they delude themselves in this way I am not sure. One of them listens to Greenday, 'cause they're sooooo goffikk. Another believes she can become a vampire through a sceance(not sure about spelling). They are idiots and give the subculture a bad name. I'm not exactly uber-goth meself, but I "out-goth" them on several counts. Open-mindedness(is that a a word?) ,IQ (they be trolls ) Ahh well I'm ranting. Sorry....What I was trying to say is that the school doesn't need to discourage "goth". The pupils manage it very well...

I can't wait to get back to the U.S. to rejoin my friends and the rest of the family & people are just open-minded unlike here. I've been in this shithole for quite some time and I've basically had enough.Another year to go...

My high school is just your basic average public high school. The principal did shoot down the GSA's idea of a Transvestite day, but apparently he was worried about it causing a distraction. We are not allowed to wear spiked wristbands, but the law is not enforced. As a matter of fact, the only rules that are really enforced concerning the dress code are the hat restrictions and clothing length regulations.
Most of the "alternative" kids only have trouble with a few jocks who are stuck in the fifties greasers-socs mentality, and some of the baby bats who are seriously anti-prep give us some trouble and annoy the heck out of us. Most of the teachers and other students are indifferent. As long as your t&a are covered, no one cares.

My school seems to have a problem with me. I am the only semi-gothic person there in the entire hell hole, and it sucks. They have like, a whole list of clothes that I can not wear! It's really annoying!

Yes indeed.
This is sort of a rant abot school... but's it's more about students, because I'm getting a lot of time to vent about administrators since I'm writing a research paper called "Why Students Hate School" (I'd post some of it, but it's rather long. by the way, Emmanual Kant makes me want to barf rusty nails). Everything different is "emo" to them. Invader Zim is Emo. Dying your hair is Emo. Reading is Emo. The Cure is Emo. STOP THE (mediocre) MADNESS!!

So let me get this straight....every counter culture on earth is emo? Because why? Because people don't really know what emo is? Because people don't know what all the other counter culturse are? Because people don't believe in personality?

... because emo is the cool new thing, so that's obviously what everyone wants to be.

random memory... I went to junior prom with this guy ( totally didn't want to, but what evah). Anyway, when I entered the dining room, an entire table of people did the "dah dah dah dah, snap snap" from the Adam's family. I thought it was actually pretty funny.
random memory2....In ceramics class, this guy was really making fun of me on a daily basis. My solution was to sculpt a clay figure roughly in his image and casually steal his comb for access to a strand of hair to bake within my figure. People, as I had hoped, told him what I was up to and he freaked the fuck out. He avoided me like the plague after that.
random memory3 - Science class, nasty comments and teasing from this guy. Embarrasment and anger in me. I couldn't beat him up,but I had to do something. Solution: During break between regular class and lab i cut my arm (i don't advocate this, i was a nut ball in highschool), and wrote die in blood on a piece of paper which was propped on his notebook when he returned from the break. This totally worked as I got a reputation for being insane and evil and no one bothered me anymore.
Word of Hope and Advice...This was a looong time ago, but I remember how awful high school could be, particularly if you are unique. Please, know that it really does get better after high school. Don't hurt yourselves. Don't let it drag your spirit down. Embrace who you are and revel in your uniqueness. Write, draw, create... turn your angst or experiences into art. Take negativity sent your way and transform it into energy that serves you. Also, don't be a prick. In other words, don't judge or tease or hate other people because of their clothes or skin or anything else. Rise above the bullshit!

ennui, I'm starting to really like you! Funny, true, and rounded off with some damn good advice.
I wish I'd known in school that things really would get better one day. Thing is, as you get older the years start to fly by so quickly that it's easy to forget that when you were thirteen or fourteen, the time til you could leave school felt like an age. All you can do is stick it out and know that one day, people will think it's cool to do your own thing and start to laugh at the clones who pick on you.
Oh, and a sizeable percentage of them will probably wind up scrubbing toilets for a living. Trust. Count the days.

I think the biggest thing in schools nowadays are those who fit in and who don't...Who have different pigments and who doesn't, who's in the 'new thing' and who's not. Basically, you'd hear alot of bullshit about how some schools have alot of violence..Why? Becuase people in school nowadays make fun of others, while later in the future turn out to be more successful when those people and won't end up scrubbing toilets as they would.
Most of them suffer the 'teenage' disease of " The Fitting In Disorder". They have no personality and no pride of who they are and what they do. And personally, this is just the way it is these days at schools and whatever, basically, there would be no cure until later in the future.
People that do pick and tease people because they're different and they not part of the social group are just scared to leave that specific group so they won't lose their freindship with their buddies in order to stay popular. They probably follow orders from certain people in the group that 'created' them, and if they don't do it they're out or they get the hell beaten out of them for a change or just both!
Fuck the people that don't get it! What a bunch of fart-filled fucks, and yes! You have ever kind in the school I go to !

As a former school teacher, now enrolled in graduate school, I can tell you for a fact that small towns treat Goth stuudents like sh*t. They are shunned by teachers and I was the only one who was kind to them, byut then again few of the staff liked me either.
I call it the Tyranny of Normality.
Small towns insist everybody be normal and conformists.

As much as I agree, I have to say that my particular small-town school is rather accepting. Teachers tend to like me almost more than I'm comfortable with, and I've yet to hear a bad word directed at the only "true" Goth in school (not me, if you're wondering) that wasn't a simple criticism of her dress-- one that was more than likely taken back within moments of being spoken.
Of course, my school has more than its share of trend-followers, both of the Hot Topic sort and the Abercrombie sort, but most people tend to be rather accepting in general. In fact, the "punks" are worse than the Hollister-clad, as far as I can tell. Our cheerleaders and football-players are amazingly personable. Then again, my values and interests tend to lead me away from those crowds, so I may be mistaken.

I got along very well with my highschool teachers. I'm an intelligent and nice girl, so why wouldn't they? Most people get over the black velvet, as long as you're behaving in a normal, friendly way (no dear, telling your teachers to fuck off and talking about how Nobody Understands You is not normal and friendly behaviour, it's just childish - it really is).
Actually, I got a lot of compliments from both teachers and students. There were some students who laughed at me and asked me if I was wearing my prom dress, but I took that as a compliment. In fact, the people that said such things were the kind of people that would make me very afraid if they would actually think I looked cool.
It also depens on what style of clothing you're wearing, nice dresses and victorian blouses are very dignified, but I can understand that a lot of teachers find PVC mini-skirts not really appropriate. Really, you CAN still be your own unique self without exposing your underwear.

I'm in a Catholic School, I don't think my teachers know what gothic means. But my english teacher told me she doesn't like goths and that she thought we were crazy, creepy and strange. I took it as a complement!
