Jake has officially been re-classed as a CTI, his ship out date has also moved up to early April instead of mid-May, which kind of sucks for him as it will still be rather cold up in Great Lakes but starting things sooner is still a good thing.

Cryptologic Technician Interpretive, essentially he will be a linguist. He won't know what language they are going to teach him until he completes boot camp but he qualified for the top tier languages so it will be Mandarin, Korean, or Arabic.

That's awesome! If its going to be Manadrin, tell him Mandarin isn't scary, my prof triggers my anxiety around it, but my homework I actually find fun. I make flash cards with the symbols on them and my sister will randomly take one and demand to know what it is XD The only thing that's a pain in the ass is that you're basically learning two languages, since the symbols are not phonetic. And the tones you have to watch but once you get an ear for it, its not bad.

I 'applied' for a job at a Halloween store a day ago (it was really just giving the woman my name and number in case she ever needed someone extra).
Got a call today, and I start work on Thursday.
Fuck. Yes.

Sounds cool... I'd love to work at a Halloween store! Congrats!
I was able to afford cat treats today. He deserves them... most of the time.

Oh, is that like a Defense Language Institute type deal? If I remember correctly, the stuff like Chinese and Korean is a good 18-24 month course. He'd pretty much be in school for a good while. Does he have any idea what his CONUS/OCONUS rotation will look like when he graduates from DLI?
Oh, I'm also curious: If his job is something like a linguist, does he still qualify for the extra pay for scoring high enough on the OPI? When I was learning Pashto, I read that it was something like an extra 300-1000 dollars a month for scoring just a 2. Err. To put that into perspective, I scored just underneath a 2 from only 3 months of studying the language when I went to school for it, so his proficientcy after he's done with the school would obviously be much higher. It might be something to look into!

Finding out there's a "Ghouls Night Out" roller derby spooktacular on Sunday, October 30th featuring Zombies versus Vampires!
I might just have to go ... sounds like fun!

When I went to the local comic book convention (Comicpalooza) back in April, they held a couple of fennish roller derby events. I think one was Trek versus Star Wars (wish I'd seen that!) and Autobots versus Decepticons!

Yep, I believe that all top tier languages are 18 month courses, the lower tier languages start at 6 months (I think).

He does and he told me but I don't remember.

Unfortunately he would only get that pay for additional languages.

I want to say that, normally, they would but the army and I think the marines have been experimenting with trying to churn out as many people with a little bit of language skill as possible. Like, the Pashto course I took was a last minute decision to be funded by my unit, so they had to condense it from 6 months to 3, but still maintain the same standards for completion as opposed to the Dari course before that which was only 5 months.
It's probably more likely all that is a branch specific decision, though. It makes sense, given the level and type of interaction that you expect from a platoon of infantry in rural Afghanistan versus a US/South Korean training exercise, for example. It's just not necessary for the soldiers to build and retain their language because they won't need it after 12-15 months when their deployment ends and the hearts and minds bullshit goes out the window. The guys that stay at DLI for a year or more, however, are given that opportunity because those skill sets in information technology are projected to be needed by that level of command for a good while.

Bummer! I wonder if he'll get that opportunity? I know that you can't just pick up anything and get paid for it (it only applies to languages with a military significance) so I expect it would be pretty difficult to learn another of those languages with work's support or even being self taught.

I succeeded at making a poached egg! Of course that was after 5 failures(in my defense, 3 of them were due to the egg yolk being punctured). I only wish I had bigger better eggs to work with from grade AA rather than these grade A eggs I was stuck working with.

Spy on them, at the very least.
If I play my cards right, however, I might be able to convince GANDHI that it's in his people's better interest receive their aluminum from me, instead of from China.
