I never cared for Chronicles of Narnia, supposedly the Golden Compass sucked compared to the books, as those books were never aimed towards children as the movie made out to be. I definitely want to get my hand His Dark Materials, though unfortunately I can't due to certain circumstances.

No? They are amazing books, and you're right, I think they are more geared towards adults or at least teenagers anyway, follows the same themes as Paradise Lost. The movie made me so mad, no mention of the church or god or anything.
Speaking of which, if I can find someone who read Paradise Lost and Faust and so on that wasn't a movie and wasn't required by school I'd be impressed.

I want to read Paradise Lost pretty badly, it's about God's plan and "free will" is it not? Because if it is I would run go buy a copy ASAP, but again, circumstances at home not permitting. >.>

Not allowed that kind of literature? Though it was praised when it first came out, basically yes it is about free will, and the only way to please God is blind obedience. It casts Satan in a more sympathetic view as well, he's much like a tragic hero.

I've read Paradise Lost. On the whole I found it pretty tedious but forced myself through it thinking, "there must be a reason this is so huge", and... there was. I found the ending intensely moving, and in their historical context, the ideas are pretty radical. Shame I only read up on the background afterwards though. I didn't want to ruin it, but in retrospect would probably have enjoyed it more.
I really like the Dark Materials trilogy, but the film was utterly terrible.

Yes, my mother is, unfortunately, a Jehovah's Witness. Ooh, I want to read it, that's always been something that interested/annoyed me. According to the bible we have free will so that we can do whatever we want, but in order to reach paradise we need to be blindly obedient. Sometimes that's how I see Satan in the bible, but at other times he seems more like a spoiled child, but I never saw him as truly evil.

I don't think the book could be any more ruined than it is while just existing..

I didn't read the whole conversation, so if I'm wrong, just ignore this...but if your mother doesn't let you read a certain kind of book...just go to the library and read it there.

Why? Does your mother not take you to the library? Do you not have a library at school? Are you unable to just buy a book and hide it?

No, getting a ride is a problem. If she takes me to the library she's going to look over my shoulder at what I'm checking out. Friends won't take me because they don't want to go to the library. If I take the bus my mother will grill me about where I was.
The school library is very, very, very tiny and mostly has books for the lower schoolers (I guess they're assuming that the upper schoolers don't want to read?)
I could do that, but I won't have a ride to the bookstore and I'm broke (I won't be old enough for anyone to hire me until December.)
I mean, of all things, books are the easiest with her since they don't have ratings or parental advisory stickers but if the cover art is too strange or it has a name like Paradise Lost she'll freak out.

Ask her for a ride to the library, and don't check anything out. Just stay there and read.
Or take the bus...and if she grills you...tell her where you were.

No, she doesn't just drop me off places, she has to stay there, otherwise she always jumps to the conclusion that I'm with a guy. She's... pretty ridiculous.
She a) won't believe me or b) will get mad because she just bought me a bunch of books.

If you want to read the book you can read it. Its Impossible for a Parent to stop you reading a book unless you don't really care about reading that book. Have you guys forgot how to be sneaky?

The last time I tried to be sneaky, I got thrown in a mental hospital.
Not going through that again, thank you.

You seem to be trying to have a reason not to read the book, Everyone of our points has been answered by "not possible". Its no point trying to give you idea's because you have already given up.

Well, that's pretty fucking stupid. I'm not going to make up excuses not to read a book, if I didn't want to read it I wouldn't have said anything about wanting to read it in the first place. And no, I have not given up. If I go to the school library and they don't have it (I'm assuming they won't) then I'll just have to wait until December or January when I get a job to try and go out and buy it.

Not trying to get you in trouble but you could maybe possibly if you wanted to read it online, though if you're like me you just can't read literature online.

Did you hear about this computer book sony is coming out with? It looks like a book, you open it up and there's a screen, and you can upload books into it from your computer ^_^ That'll be neat, reminds e of Penny's computer book from Inspector Gadget

Yeah, she goes through my room and phone records but she doesn't bother to check what I'm doing online. Though when I try to read online I always get sidetracked, I'll try.
Well, I heard about a notebook that someone is working on that has two screens instead of a screen and a keyboard/mousepad (the keyboard and mousepad are up on the bottom screen) so is it like that and you can flip it over and there's a page on each side? That's so cool!

nah, its not double sided, I just double checked (though that would be awesome.....) its good because it doesn't have a back light, so its just like looking at a page and won't hurt mein eyes like when I try to read stuff on the computer.
