I'm so freaking sad...

My husband left yesterday and I won't be seeing him again until sometime in May...

*le sigh*

Okay, I know you're new here, but I'm passing a piece of advice along to you in the hopes of saving your seemingly nice-and-innocent-enough butt from some marshmallow toasting.

Whenever you discover a new board, blog, community, etc ... you should make sure you look for the rules and/or faqs before you jump in. If you had done that here, you would have noticed the INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE! (Do Not Start Your Own Intro Thread!!) thread.

You should go there immediately, read a few examples of how folks here introduce themselves, and then introduce yourself. This will make some of the Elder Goths and other folks here happy.

And welcome to GNet.

We were right as rain, as it were. We stayed right in our apartment since it's on the second floor, we wouldn't have had to worry about flooding if it actually had hit our area (like it was supposed to). About the worst thing that happened was we lost power for about 15 min. in the middle of the night. We had a good laugh at a few friends who we'd offered to stay with us and wait it out, but they decided to spend 2 days in traffic. Ah, good times! I had some mac & cheese with ketchup last night, lol.

Above and beyond their civic duty

I know that most GNetters have issues with the various celebrations that happen at this time of year. I have problems with a lot of it as well. But every now and then, I learn of something that happens at this time of year that just seems RIGHT.

Most of us (myself included) have tried to get out of serving jury duty ... it's just such a damded inconvenience (or more than that for some.)

Here's a jury that took their civic duty, and their sense of oblgation, to another level:

Jurors wrap up verdict, then gifts for victim and her family

By Kirk Mitchell
Denver Post Staff Writer
DenverPost.com

(excepted from http://www.denverpost.com/search/ci_3317382)

Shortly after jurors completed an emotionally draining child-molestation trial, they decided to reach out to the needy family of the victim and provide Christmas for them.

"Instead of just turning and running ... they said: 'Wait a minute. This family was traumatized.' And they went and did something about it," Denver police Detective Ken Klaus said. It was the first time in Klaus' 20-year career that he had seen jurors respond the way they did.

During the trial, jury forewoman Jennifer Volk said, she could tell how painful it was for the 10-year-old victim to testify. It was also horrible that the trial happened during the holidays, she said. Having a 1-year-old child of her own, she said she could relate to what the girl must have been going through.

"Having a child, you really understand how innocent they are and how important little things are to them," she said. "It was heartbreaking to think (she) wouldn't have a Christmas." So when the trial was over, Volk asked the judge whether it would be appropriate for her to buy presents for the family of the victim

The district judge found no problem with her buying the presents, and two other jurors immediately said they wanted to chip in. It was the beginning of an informal, word-of-mouth fundraising campaign.

When Volk went back to work at her law firm, she sent an e-mail to fellow workers, and about 10 of them offered to contribute. She told family members, and they also helped. Contacted by police, the family sent a Christmas wish list.

In a matter of weeks, Volk raised $500.

The victim will get a bicycle. Each of her three siblings and her mother will also get presents. And the family will get gift certificates to buy food, Volk said. "It's just been a really amazing experience," she said. "We wanted to provide the family with a little holiday happiness."

Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for District Attorney Mitch Morrissey, said the victim's family really needed the help. When the victim's mother first learned about the sexual abuse, she had to make a decision, Kimbrough said. "To protect her daughter, this mother had to walk away from everything they had," she said. "That's part of what makes this gift so meaningful." The mother moved into a one- room basement apartment. She took various jobs, working 10 hours a day, she said.

Detective Klaus said he handles hundreds of child-abuse cases a year and most people don't like talking about the sad stories. All the victim's family wanted was justice, and the jurors provided that and so much more, he said.

"I think the family is going to have a big smile on their faces when they get the presents," he said.

He had to go help out his family for awhile. His grandfather is sick (and 91 years old) and his father is getting old so he needs help with his businesses. Since he's going back to help, he will be attending school there as well... which means I won't be seeing him at least until May. It's hard because since we met eachother, we've been nearly inseperable. I think the longest we've been apart was less than a day, and it has suddenly been shoved into 5 months.

I should be happy because part of the reason he wanted to go was to start building our new life together... But I'm still all bummed out.

Thanks for caring EPS it really helps, and it means alot to me...

Your welcome sweetie..

I relate with the pain of distance. It IS hard and shitty and painful. But you do what you have to do, to be a family. To be together. The best thing you can do is stay as busy as possible, invest in a decent webcam for each of you, and saunter into Victoria Has No Secrets, and get some DELICIOUS Lingerie to dazzle him with when he sees you. ( Online or in person ) Also some of the major airlines run some decent fare specials if you purchase a few months in advance. Keeping a journal helps as well, and it is something you can share with him when you guys are in the same zip code again.

I know it sucks hard now, but when you guys are back in each other's arms, it will all feel like a vague and distant bad dream.

Hang in there..

Great Sacrifices are possible with Great Love..

Hugs..

Sorry to hear you'll be apart so long, Nix. Hope it all goes well. When you look back you'll realize that it's just so many grains of sand in the hourglass.

Eps~ You are right, and those are really good ideas! Although airfare roundtrip to where he is going is something like $4,000. I just have to keep myself busy until he is back.

Thanks for the support as well, Wolfmoon. I really really appreciate it.

He just called me from his connecting flight in London... Put a GINORMOUS smile on my face...

Your Welcome, Mael ...

I feel no real connection to the religeous or other holidays celibrated this time of year, although I find myself increasingly intruiged by the pagan origins of celebrating the Winter Solstice and how Christianity hijacked the party. But I do like the aspect that somehow it does seem to inspire some people to act with "goodwill toward man."

We spend a lot of time focusing our attention on those who are evil, wreckless or incompetent. I just think it's important that we notice when someone gets it absolutely right.

By the way, I will still be drinking like a fish come New Year's Eve. Now there's a holiday I can really get behind!

Why does wreckless look like it's spelled wrong? ... Oh, crap - it's reckless!

(mumbling into my dictionary)

Hi Wolfy! ^_^

I had a good Christmas, thanks in part to my great friends here (eyes, ohthefuckwell, urian, edible, Teapotscar (and Granny too!) and even the family was nice. But I got a call last night...my cousin passed away. She was close to my sister's age who is only six years older than me, while I don't know her exact age I know she was too young to die like she did. Also I have a cold or flu or something.

And Xnguela sounds MUCH older than she looks! O_O
