See, you think goth is a synonym with good. It's not. I didn't say VNV Nation was bad. VNV Nation is not a goth band. But why do you desire for them to be considered so?

I personally think that goth is the easiest way to name a culture that is so full of variety and misconceptions. i know a lot of 'goths' who absolutely will not hang out with anyone who doesnt think manson is god. their loss. there are so many of us that "just dont fit in." the easiest way is to group us altogether so the mainstream can classify and move on. whatever. were just people who like different things. like how some people can eat tripas* (bonus points for anyone who knows what that is)

Yeah, you're right. Goth is being a fan of manson and shopping at Hot Topic.

That's why I'm not a goth.

We have that in common, then. I'm an elitist when it comes to music, and I don't care if it makes me an asshole. I cannot hang around people who listen to Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Manson and the like. It has nothing to do with culture, I just see it as people without enough motivation to actually listen to better music.

Just because someone listens to something that the mainstream deems to be goth (Tool, Manson, or NIN) hardly makes them unmovitated to listen to other music. I'm a big fan of NIN, but I also enjoy The Sisters of Mercy, the Cure, and Christian Death. I'm a big fan of industrial/ebm, as well. If I see something I like at Hot Topic, and it's within an acceptable price range for myself, I'll buy it; same goes for Target, Value World, the Salvation Army, the internet, or any of the stores in the mall. I don't really give really care where I buy my shit at...if I can afford it without putting myself out for important things, I'll get it. If someone takes him or herself and their "gothiness" too seriously, and writes me off because I like NIN or I got a pair of tights at Hot Topic, they are hardly worth my time and are quite stupid for being so narrow-minded.

For the record, goth is actually derived from the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths. Most people who call themselves "goth" don't even know who the Visigoths/Ostrogoths where.

Not true. I've met tons of idiots that because people talk about Visigoths and Ostrogoths they feel they're part of a millennium-old culture.
We're not talking about Visigoths and Ostrogoths, and there's no reason to mention them. Who the hell speaks of photograph lighting when speaking about The Flash?

If those people really think they are a part of a Germanic tribe that no longer exists...then...I really don't know what to say.

The original poster of this topic was speaking of the definition of "goth". The term, itself, comes from the Visigoths/Ostrogoths, from the negative connotations people used to associate with them as a people and their work.

I fully understand that how I perceive it is not the case, but again, I'm an elitist when it comes to music. And again, I'm fully aware that it makes me an asshole.

Actually, I was being satiracle. I for one, do not give a toss what people think is goth because in the end, they as well as every other goth post the very beginning of the movement, bought into a marketing scheme. Very few goths actually came into it by accident alone. A goth is just a "dark" consumer.

I started listening to the music a good while before I started dressing or acting "goth".

"Hot topic is not [goth] rock"?

Slightly edited to fit context. :P

You know, the majority of CDs you find in a Hot Topic are generally some of the only music that that I can't find tollerable.

How would one talk to a woman, without oozing "I lack self-respect/esteem/confidence"?

liking something about yourself sure does help and spending time on you appearance helps a bunch (when people put time and effort in looking their best then other people pick up on that as a sign that the person likes themself and in truth it does make many people feel better about themself)

But these bastards either get used to our idea of goth, or they get out. We, almost entirely, do not take goth half as serious as wannabe goths do. Most of us acknowledge that it was just an offshoot of punk. We're not smarter because we're goth; we're not more romantic as goths; we're nothing just because we're goths. Confusing our musical tastes and occasional style for a sense of identity would be pretty sad. We don't hate preps - I myself have a little more preppy friends than non-preppy friends, and we get along quite well.
We don't complain about how other people treat us generally. Most of us accept that if we look weird, people will look at us weird. It's a choice, and we can just as well choose not to.
In fact, trying to answer the question of "then why are we here and what are we doing here" I can't really find an answer. I look simply punk save for the gothic band shirts; Badteccy lolz at the cliché that is goth; Ophelia is too cool to be a goth; Kontan gets bored by the 'gothic' scene; Humane's personality goes beyond his wearing black; Wormboy's a metalhead.... The point is that nobody's really goth goth (except perhaps resident deathrockers) but we're certainly gothier than the average crow-looking mopehead that can't get laid. Personally I think you're only goth if you're trying to be in The Batcave (i.e. listening to goth music at the moment or being at a club)
first of all i think you need to stop sterotyping people.second, i think anyone can be whatever they want to fucking be. DONT YOU EVER FUCKING JUDGE ME OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. YOU NEED TO SHUT YOUR COCKSUCKER.

I'll take your advice because it's both good and ironic :P

Yeah, it is pretty ironic. Or I could just be using you all for pictures of extremely sexy Gothic women.

It seems you people are smarter than I gave you credit for.

And that after seeing that documentary on the History channel about psychic vampires, this god damn tin-foil hat didn't work.
