I still prefer my discman over an MP3 player. Sure, I can only have 700 MB worth of MP3s versus several gigs at once, but I don't have to wait until I get home to change the playlist. Plus, if I actually want to listen to a CD instead of an MP3 disc, I can.
Besides, my discman can run for 30 to 40 hours on a single battery, whereas my MP3 player runs out of juice after about 10 or 15 hours.

Pettiness astonishes you? Cool!
Anyways, it's not so much going over the teacher's head as teaching this person to use chain of command, as they will need to do in post-high-school settings.

Given that you have a class in "philosophy and ethics", and assuming things haven't changed enormously since I was in high school, I'm going to guess that you're going to a religious school, or at least a school poisoned by religion.
If I'm wrong, pin the fucker to the wall. He doesn't have a leg to stand on.
If I'm right, do what you've probably figured out anyway. Disobey him in every way and at any time possible. Then if someday you have kids of your own, don't subject them to the same bullshit.

Dude sounds like he's in the wrong line of work.
I'd go talk to the principle about it, and see what he has to say. Unless it's a private religious institution, I see no reason why that guy should bully you like that. :/
Seriously, of all things to get offended at...Voltaire?? XD XD XD [Even though I can see why that song in particular may ruffle a few feathers. ]

Eh, does he listen in to everyone's iPod? It's a rather odd thing to be doing.

Well, not all teachers, etc. are created equal; maybe the OP will have a different outcome.

Forgive me if I'm being astonishingly slow, but I don't understand why I would do such a thing. Generally speaking, unhappiness is a bad thing...and I like Baudelaire, why shouldn't I openly read his work?

Bah. Most teachers are like that anyway.

It's not an argument.
It's "No, this is my iPod, there's no rule saying you have to know what I'm listening to, fuck off."

I was saying that Baudelaire sucks, so anyone that reads him for actual enjoyment deserves in my opinion every small detail that comes about that will make their day a little more unhappy.

Jilly's just being a sarcastic ass; pay him no heed.
If you enjoy it, then read it, though I've no idea who Baudelaire is.

It's not sarcasm. There's another word for it: dry humor
And if you knew him, you'd at least say "gee, he is overrated"

He's to me what Bob Dylan is to Ophelia, I guess.
I can't stand him.

Yeah...for those folks who aren't used to your peculiar brand of humor, it may be a bit difficult to get over t3h Internetz, Jillz.
And yeah, I may find the guy dull, but to each his/her own.

Which is amusing, because Baudelaire was my favorite poet for years, and only beaten by Millay now that I've come to know her work.

Simple solution: go to the main office and ask some administrator if he has any authority to do such a thing, there is about a 95% chance that they will say he in fact does not and that you can just ignore him (and if he does something similar you can tell him no and if he insists you can politely tell him that he does not have that authority and should leave you alone).
