Oh and also... as far as drop out rates go. Yes there are many, many drop outs. But you also have to be aware that the majority of them are minorities. AND... Reason why statistics are higher these years is because for one thing... population is damn skyrocketing why? hmm...teen pregnancy? immigrants? gangs? I mean when you really look at whats causing drop outs do you think that a nice little talk from Mr. President is really going to help when the causes for them are so much bigger, and have everything to do with them as people, and nothing to do with the government??? Okay... back, way back...when this country was founded, all children were taught at home correct? they were taught simple math, how to read, and how to write if they were lucky and were from a good family. Later on in the 1800's there were schools where all children had the opportunity to go to... if they're parents weren't forceful about them working at the farm etc. Early 1900's same thing. 30's? 40's? Almost all kids went to school by this time. BUT... my own grandparents both dropped out in the 40's in 6th and 8th grade. Why? because they had to work... I spoke with my grandma about it once and she told me that many of her other friends had also had dropped out at that age and they were all married by the age of 15 or 16. But the difference was that they were responsible they knew how to work, the girls knew how to clean, how to take care of a child, how to cook...the guys weren't lazy, they didn't sit all day in front of a television playing games all day they knew how to build stuff, plant and kill an animal for food. Our generation is high tech and all and yes we have a lot of smart kids but I truly think we are screwed. Not only do we have some of the most laziest, horniest, and brainwashed kids in the history of the world... but we have a government who is just adding more to the brainwashing that it's not even funny. . . I know that it's never going to end. And it's just going to continue going down this spiral of what has been in the making for a very long time. But I don't intend on following along. And if I ever have children they are NOT going to public school.

If how you turned out is any indication, Jin, homeschooling would seem to be a really BAD idea.
In all seriousness though, I would think that a parent who wanted their child to gain independent thought would want them to go out in the world and be exposed to ideas other than their own.

Look up his speech, I do believe that a quick google search will bring up the whole thing. He essentially talked about how important it is to make the most of your education and how education is essential for achieving your goals.
Just so you know what is in most history textbooks is far from fake, I don't know what your mother taught you but don't simply go on her word when she tells you something. Look critically even at what she tells you, she may not be purposefully misleading you but she doesn't know everything and may have been misled herself.
I was taught to question and be myself, my school system never seemed to push us towards blind acceptance but encouraged us to truly learn and think. Public schools can do that every bit as well as home schooling, plus you get all the additional social development benefits that home school just can't replicate.

I was never taught to listen to only my mothers opinions, I knew what they were. But I chose my own and at this point in life I have completely different beliefs than she has and we both respect each other. So many people have these misconceptions that home schooled children know nothing about the outside world. I grew up my whole life being asked the questions, "Do you have any friends?", "Isn't it lonely learning at home?". I mean really...I had friends outside of learning that I played with after they got home from school. And learning at home alone...only helped me concentrate better and think for myself instead of listening to different teachers opinions... Instead I was reading on my own gather up my own views.

I'm so tierd of hearing about Obama.
Bumper stickers
Non-stop fucking commercials
Radio
Even on forums
He's fucking everywhere
Kudo's for being the first black President. I get it not that I particularly give to shits who or what the President is.
Honestly whatever he does cant realy fuck up America any more than Bush did I doubt he could bring us any farther down.
Thats not to say I agree with anything that he's doing.
The medical my moms on is being changed over to something else so she may have to change doctors, the current one we have she has had for seven years, and she dose not accept the different health care plan. So I may have to pay out of my pocket to keep the doctor for her and thats fucked up.
My mom is disabled and "your" going to take the one doctor away that shes had for all this time? and make her go to doctors who once almost killed her because they accept this plan?
It's a fucking mess.....

Really now? Have you ever heard of the book " Founding myths"? You would be shocked to find out how much of what you've learned in elementary school was lies. Many facts are indeed true...but so much has been lied about to make America look better.

I'm not saying a President is not important. Policies and control of the nation are pretty much in his hands and we have to abide by them or in my case tolerate them....The President also controls warfare wich affects us all..
I dont involve myself in politics much because to me its a lose lose situation so I do try to avoid it if possible I pretty much take the stand of "Ignorance is bliss" as ignorant as it is....
I'm just irked with hearing about it 24/7 ive even stoped listening to music on the radio and i'd crush my t.v if my mom didnt like it so much....His every move is reported every two seconds

It's not really fair to get uppity with coverage of politics simply because you choose to be ignorant, is it?

Haha true. Unfortunantly i'm not quite as ignorant as I want to be thats why i'm tierd of hearing about it. I just get irked and riled up and thats hardly fair either.

So you state that the dropout rate is higher among minorities in the US. Yes this is true, but you know why. The system we have created keeps the weak down and puts the strong on a high platform. I would type more, but I'm lazy.

Actually I have flipped though it but soon grew board as it didn't contain any information that I hadn't already learned in school. We were taught the stories of Molly Pitcher and the like but they were taught as tall tales when I was in elementary school to help us get more excited about the past, not as facts. Sorry but I actually received a comprehensive education, not a perpetuation of urban legends and American myths.

I'm not really bothered. I don't think that this Obama speech will be a pivotal moment in anybody's life but I can't say that I'm against it.

It was a rather harmless speech, I don't really see how anyone could object to students being encouraged to make the most of their education.

Nit picking, even if there's nothing to really nit pick. I think it's cool that he's encouraging the kids, they need all the encouragement they can get.

the president encouraging kids to stay in school, letting them know it is their own hard work that will bring success in life rather than placing blame for failure everywhere else? great! wonderful. an excellent message.
where this crosses the line is in issuing detailed lesson plans with leading questions designed specifically to create a certain pattern of thought within students that tells them it is ok to think "for themselves" as long as they reach the same political conclusions as the person making the speech.
that, and the precedent this has the ability to set, is the issue in question, not whether or not encouraging kids to stay in school is a good thing.
i will say that i have neither heard the speech or seen said lesson plans, so I can''t say whether or not this fits the above criteria. Neither have most folks debating the question.
Why don't we all see what it is before passing judgement?

Well the controversal part is the part where he asks students to help him with his plans, and people are drawing parallels to George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The whole speech contreversy is quite absurd. As I mentioned earlier, every president since FDR has done this without all the drama surrounding it this time.
I do find this to be the a most ironic thing that will turn around and bite the right-wing in the arse later.
Think about it.
Half the schools in America BANNED the viewing of the President's speech. Outright banned it. They had teachers telling students, and I quote, it was 'evil' (NBC News did a big piece on it).
So you have teachers banning this speech, along with a boat load of right-wing parents, many who kept their kids HOME from school because their school was going to show this speech.
That right there makes it the most interesting thing kids have seen all year. I mean, shitloads of news coverage, protests, parents pulling kids out of school just to avoid having them hear a speech. Thats gotta be one life changing speech, one would think. God only knows what the kids are thinking, right?
So of course kids now want to hear it, and sooner or later they will find out the whole speech was about...staying in school and getting good grades. Wow, talk about a let down.
Then the question arises, why was the speech so bad? Kid will be thinking maybe the message wasn't important? I' m sure that won't be the case for all, but you can bet some kids will walk away thinking that school is somehow brainwashing them and authority figures like the President should be ignored, and messages like stay in school are not important.
And the right-wing have now unintentionally created a group of left-wing thinkers.
More importantly, once they figure out the whole controversy is much like the 'dont smoke pot because its evil' argument, you can bet a large chunk will be into experimenting in other taboos, since this like many other arguments you hear from adults when youre a child are bogus.
It seems this sort of behaviour will be quite counter-productive in the long run for the right-wing nuts who are trying to force their agenda on the children.
I mean, you can only tell a child not to do things so many times and tell them NOT to listen to people before they get curious and start opening their minds.
By implanting the seeds of insurrection against this President at such a young age you can bet they will take this with them through life, questioning all authority and their 'right' to ignore what authoritarian figures have to say.

Seriously, that's your only reason? Do you even know what the word "socialism" means? Would you like me to look it up for you in a dictionary?
