| Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Yeah, Third Uncle and Swing the Heartache are full of awesome.
Should this list be mentioning any Shadow Project? I haven't listened to them yet.

Theatre of Hate - "Westworld"
Second wave, but full of emotion and power. It also features a killer sax.
UK Decay - "For Madmen Only"
One of the first punk bands to develop a goth sound. Along with
the Damned - "Phaantasmagoria"
the Birthday Party - "Junk Yard"
One of the darkest goth bands of its time. Surreal and haunting. Includes the ever-popular "Release the Bats"!

It's probably sacrilege, but I tend to consider the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" another early example of gothic rock. Not necessarily being part of the genre, just having a lot of the same aesthetics that you would find on other earlies like the Doors, Pink Floyd, and the Velvets.
Now, here's my reasoning:
Brian Wilson crafted an album about sorrow, aging, death (yep, just listen to "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"), and has a tankload of melancholy. I'm probably misinterpreting the entire album, but I find also the sweeping backgrounds crafted in instrumentals such as "Let's Go Away For Awhile" and "Pet Sounds" are way beyond your typical pop album from that time. The songs themselves are mixed with those perfect Beach Boys harmonies, especially evident when you put on "Caroline No" or "You Still Believe In Me", as they are taking on the qualities of a baroque ensemble.
Another Beach Boys song that can be considered gothic: "Till I Die" from the Surf's Up album. Give that a listen and let your spine be tingled.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Tinderbox." Their best, I think.
Also, I would put in a vote for Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "Brain Salad Surgery." It might not be a goth piece in the traditional sense, but it is definitely gothic in style. Very dark, spooky, even a little chilling. The cover art by HR Giger really fits it.
Also, there's some obcure indie music out there that's pretty goth, or gothic. Cassell Webb's "Llano" is an amazing album, a real masterpiece. Never got the attention it deserved, I don't think.

They're pretty awesome, but I don't really associate them with being Goth.

Um, people, not to start any more "that's not goth" discussions here, but The Cure weren't actually goth, they were New Wave. Which is sort of related, but not quite the same. Anyway, it seems that it's a band that many goths have accepted as being goth. I'd rather say they were an influence on gothic music than actually playing goth themselves.

They certainly were Goth for about three albums in the early 80's, before they went in a more mainstream rock direction.
