electro - yeah, I don't want to shave it off so I'll just have to wait then.
Rosie - Yeah - fuck her. Nah, she's actually a lovely person when she's not working...
crucifix - OUCH! That just sounds... bad... Hair dyes should never do that to you if they're good ones. Oh well, thanks for warning me about that.

^I know, I used loreal dye last night and it didn't fry my scalp way clairol normally does. I think I am just sensitive to clairol.

Some people are more sensitive to certain ingredients in dyes than others....if you're dying your hair and not using bleach...SKIN TEST PEOPLE! IT'S IMPORTANT!

Ok since this thread has similar advice to what I need I"ll ask here. What would I need to do if I wanted to die part of my hair white?

When I dyed my hair white/blonde, I got gradually lighter. I don't think that makes it any less damaging, but my hair stylist insisted I do it. I also used an ash toner to make it less yellow and more white. As everybody else said, CONDITIONER, CONDITIONER, CONDITIONER. I smother my hair in it every day - in the shower and leave-in product afterward while my hair is still wet.

I just went plaitnum last night. I bleached my hair until pale yellow with clairol born blonde maxi and then toned it this morning to silver-white with garnier nutrisse in white chocolate (extra light ash blonde). I only left the garnier on for 5 minutes and it was more than enough to tone the yellow to silver-white.

I've been in the process of going platinum blonde myself, since a week before thanksgiving. (From blue black)
Get 40volume developer and bleach powder. Lots of it. Use the directions on the bleach for mixing, and then bleach, bleach, bleach.. Never leave it in for more than an hour at a time, and wait at least a day before bleaching it a second, third, etc. I'm not going to lie, you might have to bleach it many many times to get it to platinum... Condition the hell out of your hair while doing this; literally go through many bottles of the stuff during it all.
Once you bleached your hair enough to get it to a very light yellow, get a toner.. It should be purple/violet in color and will rid of the ugly yellow tones. If you did it right - you should be platinum. (Hurrah)
I'm doing this myself and only have one more bleaching & the toning left to go. Then I'm going to add a few nice purple streaks.
If this post didn't scare you out of doing it, Good Luck.

Just a small update from me... I went to the hairdresser this morning to strip away the black colour. After four hours I was down to a rather fancy orange head that looked like I had yellow highlights in it. Anyway, it was really dry. I took a chance and coloured it red, which seemed to be the most sensible thing to do at the time; bleaching more would've ruined it entirely. So now I've got a flaming red head and love it.

I decided to bleach my hair blonde, and I quite liked that gingery look that goes with it. BUT as my hair is a very dark brown my roots came through very quickly so you have to be prepared to do a root touch up at least once amonth other wise it looks rather rediculous, especially if you have the pure white hair.
Just a little warning

I did that for my girlfriend, it looks great. I only had to bleach her hair for about half an hour at a time starting at the ends....then the mid lengths, then the roots, those only took 20 minutes though. she was a reddish blonde to begin with though. her hair still looks really healthy but I thnk that's because she doesn't do other things to it, like use straighteners and she leaves it to dry naturally.

TBH you could have just toned it, it wouldn't eve have been platinum But red is just as good.

Red is always fun. It takes so many steps to get it from black to blond, it really is best to probably stay at red for a few months until you can get some moister back into it. The last thing you want to happen is to dry it out so far that it will either break easily or not hold color at all anymore.

There's nothing wrong with platinum blond. I went through this weird stage at age 12 where I dyed my hair pink with multi-coloured streaks but wore dark, morbid outfits. It was completely crazy. Looking back I think, "What the hell was I thinking?!" But I don't regret it one bit.
