Well said cradle...
and to everyone, not just cradle: i did not intend any disrespect to anyone who likes to wear something from there, (you obviously think for yourself and are not sheep, and besides, i used to buy CDs there. Now i buy them online.), my point was that by buying from the corporate superstructures, the *superficial* masses will eventually make life a little more tolerable for those who previously were made to suffer merely because they are different.

I feel that that is unfair... I get angry, but maybe it is just be, that I was tormented for years about how I was... then I come to school and people are doing what I did, and THEY were the ones that yelld at me for it.

my school
See I guess I have it lucky, I go to a school Pioneer Valley Performing Arts charter public school, and there is a huge goth population, even among the teachers because there is no dress code. Although my family is from southern NJ which is racist as all hell. I went down there dressed in my casual clothes. Black suit, white striped arm warmers, eye liner,Top hat, ripped jeans with red striped stalkings underneath. And my little cousin (6 years old) comes up to me and says "why are you dressed as a murderer?" I replayed "excuse me?" he then went on to explain that his mommy (my aunt) had told him that people who dressed in black and who looked goth where killers. I get so upset at what parents are teaching their kids now a days.

Sounds like my school, dress code basically only applies to the preps and stuff.

School uniforms over here. No such thing as goth.
Make up- even on shiny sports girls- is to be taken off unless it's subtle (so I and my thing line of inner-rim eyeliner were okay). Jewellery was kept to a minimum (so my single skull ring was fine). No boots or any footwear other than sensible black shoes.
Easier this way. None of that fashion rubbish from anyone.

Meh, my school wasn't too harsh on uniforms. A few times I got told to take my nose stud out but that was it. One girl even came to school with ridiculous squiggles down her eyes & she didn't get told off.

My school had a uniform policy that wasn't enforced very strongly, the only thing they really got bugged about was people wearing trainers or not wearing their tie. The only list of items selected as particularly against the rules were ned (chav) stuff like tracksuits, knuckle dusters, Burbary caps, "football colours", etc.
At school I just wore black cargo trousers, my New Rocks, a black shirt and the school tie... and I wore the same outfit minus the tie at weekends and holidays, lmao.
But now I'm in college I'm blowing a couple hundred quid on some new clothes since my wardrobe is pretty tired now having been nothing but black trousers, black shirts and various t-shirts for five years.

My school has a semi-uniform policy, and, even though they are more lenient on the dress code than they were before, punishments for dress code violations are quite harsh (one guy from my class got an ISS during the second week of school just for an earring).
I do get away with wearing black make-up though, as well as a few other accessories. And, on days when we don't have to wear uniforms, I usually dress the way I would after school. No one really pays attention anymore, partly because I've been attending that school for so long. They've gotten used to me. However, I can't say the same if another one like me transferred. They might get the same treatment I got when I first started wearing black, back before the uniform policy came into play.

As long as it's not showing any unneccesary skin then we're allowed to wear whatever. And all my outfits are appropriate and I wear the heavy make up all the time. I go to a public school where the principal is very open minded.

At my school you're not allowed to wear really long skirts, but you can have ones that show off a nausiating amount of skin & you're not allowed one shoulder tops but you can have boob tubes. I don't get it!! 0_0

Ah, I remember the days, long ago, there were but a handful of us. My high school freaked out at the strange kids in the knee high boots and black velvet tights, purple hair jutting out in all directions, piercing in places where they shouldn't be. The hateful glares shooting out from all corners of every room and corridor. There were no dress codes as of yet, but they were soon to come. It was hard to even make friends in those days, we never cared, we huddled together in our little piece of the campus, plotting the nightfall. And when darkness came we were so alive as the house beats blasted and the juices of our decadence flowed freely. We were entranced by living, lustful and wicked, dancing wildly in our sinful ways, no fear of hell or authority. When the dawn came upon us and we dragged our weary asses into the crowded rooms, struggling to focus eyes that had only minimal sleep, no one could even comprehend what had transpired as they all slept soundly in their beds.
Today the world has become far more accepting of our lifestyle. For many of the teens today it is a phase and they will grow up and become what they despise at this time in their life. Not all, many will stay the path and live in bliss, these are the true goths, those who dare to be original and embrace the luxury of the lifestyle and not simply follow the trend of it all. For they are disillusioned and seeking the acceptence that they need to feel secure. What did we do before HotTopic? We used our imiginations, we used our creativity and we often used a needle and thread.
Dress codes exist in many schools today to kill the individuality and expression that we seek to live. They say it causes less destraction in the educational environment. They may be right. But it also dulls the creative edge.
Just a quick note to any of the cutters out there, as Godslayer Jillian had commented, don't bring goth into your twisted little game. You wear your scars with pride, but it is only a sign of weakness, crying out for someone to pay attention to you, screaming for love. Love yourself and live for the beauty where you can find it in this sick twisted world.

All I have to complain about dresscode-wise is...
They won't let me wear my stinkin cat-ears anymore...
I went to Anime Boston Last year in May... I bought Cat-ears there... I wore them TO SCHOOL for that last monthand a half or so of school... Nobody was offended... half of the teachers called me 'cute' (as you can see... 'goth' is not something my school is unfamiliar with)
this year... they told me I'm no longer allowed to wear them... though I can still paint whiskers on my face or go to school with Visual Kei makeup on... I can sharpen my nails and pain them black... I could tye-dye my hair.. I can wear chains and spikes and collars even... but not cat ears....

Actually the dress code in our school only applies to the preps- No tops that show your midriff, tank tops, flip flops, really short shorts ect.
But I did one time get in trouble for wearing a pair of tripp armwarmers. They had little tiny buckels on them and our vice princible saw them during lunch and told me I couldn't wear them because he thought I would hurt someone.

I am in an Air Force Junior ROTC high school, and being in there, they do not enforce strict laws as to how "Gothic" you can be.
Of course, you must wear a standard uniform, but I do my tricks there. My bangs are dyed red (I have naturally black hair), I do wear eyeliner (a decent style), and I fix my face to a few shades paler, but not pale enough to be considered dead. I bought myself a Manic Panic HairBag in Purple Haze, which is a messenger bag with the Manic Panic logo and Purple Haze hair trimmed on the ends. I also tied a pair of Cy-X Goggles to the bag.
It does not only have to be your bodily style, but also your bag can do so much as well!

I remember my school days. I had moved around so much that I think in my final seven years, I had been to at least a dozen different schools, and have experienced reactions from
"Wow, a black goth" to
"*glare* Devil-worshipper!" Good times, believe me... I've never experienced the bans you guys have, though. That's rather unfortunate (although I understand the thing about spikes--long spikes can be hazardous.). Most of the dress code remarks I have seen have been on profane or suggestive slogans/graphics on clothing showing skin, razor-blade/safety-pin jewelry, baggy clothinng and gang-related attire.
I had to suppress the outward aspect of my expression at school for most of my last two years of high school at the request of my sisters (who I would do almost anything for). They wanted to "fit in", and it just wouldn't do to have a sister who was so outwardly goth when one was a prep and the other was so into hip-hop. Looking back, I guess I didn't have to do it--I was known at my school, but more by the teachers than the students. I never strived to be popular--since I was always the "new kid", that kind of thing eventually became trivial. Unfortunately, my sisters were both caught up in that whole image thing... I guess in the end I did it because I knew that I could still do "me" without advertising it, so it didn't matter.
