My ex pulled crap like that. I don't know if it's the same thing just based on that tid bit but, he was emotionally exhausting to be with and to deal with after the break up. The best think I did was decide that I no longer wanted him in my life. Of course, once I did that, he declared his undying affection for me and his great need to be with me. Too little to late.
Anyway, I'm just trying to say that I don't think you're taking it too hard. Sometimes these things can be so emotionally taxing that you end up doing things that you wouldn't normally do.
