Music Finally, an entire forum devoted to talking about Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine for the Sisters of Mercy. You can talk about other bands, or other members of that band, too, if you want to be UNCOOL. |

Being a philosophy major, I actually find this a little offensive.
Can you explain how you reached this conclusion?

Okay, so what jobs are out there for people who are philosophy majors? I am being sincere here. Not trying to mock you or anything. I've just always wondered.

You could be a school teacher.
In fact, I think philosophy majors would make excellent school teachers.

I didn't choose philosophy for 'practical' purposes, but the question is very understandable.
A philosophy major is actually quite good for a variety of reasons. Yeah, you can be a school teacher, and I'd love to be a school teacher, but let's talk about more big-time jobs.
Coupled with another major or a minor, it becomes one of the best titles for anything non-scientific: historian, editor, college professor, lecturer, priest, politician...
But the best example that impresses people, and the path I'm taking is lawyer.
To go to law school you need to take a test, similar to the accuplacers and SATs. Philosophy majors get by far the best scores in that test, followed by majors in religious studies quite behind, and then substantially behind by political science majors, history majors, and interdisciplinary majors. Philosophy and Religious Study majors get scores so high that political science majors, the third best option, gets a score that's slightly lower than the average total.
A lot of people, at least in my college that has a nice pre-law program, do end up choosing philosophy as their major because of this. They actually piss me off. It annoys me that we're following the same path for entirely different reasons.
A preppy girl who says she doesn't like reading and her favorite show is America's Next Top Model is studying philosophy at my same rate because she wants to be a lawyer! She didn't even know who Sartre is and only liked Kant because that's the only one she's been introduced to.
Kant sucks!

Kierkegaard that seriously believed in Christianity because he found it ridiculous?
Better some Ortega.

Kierkegaard was a Christian, he found the Church ridiculous and all of the rules and regulations of Christianity. A profound and important thinker.
Ortega y Gasset? Not familiar with his writings.

Sorry to interject with basics since I am new at this whole Philosophy thing (in that I have no proper knowledge of other philosophers and debates and theories)
But from what I've read of Aristotle (unfortunately I can't remember what I was reading, it was something about happiness), he seems really optimistic and runs rings around himself and the reader. He really pisses me off in fact, all he was doing was stating how different humans found themselves content from different things but we all had an overall and innate goal to do good, which I think is poppycock.
Correct me if I'm wrong on what he was trying to say, I only read a fw pages before I had to leave and return the text I was reading...
Hmm, maybe Jillian could recommend me some texts to find and read?

I'm sorry, I thought you were the one that said it.
In any case, you seem to have agreed with the one who actually said it, so please, either you or he, explain how the hell is Marilyn Manson philosophical in any way?

Maybe I used the wrong word. After I read the book about him I just got the impression that Manson wanted to spread a message more than create good music. Of course, he wanted to make good music too, but it seemed like he mainly wanted to focus on "waking America from their christian slumper", or what he said, etc.

Am I wrong for thinking Marilyn Manson is funny? I thought he was trying to be entertaining and funny, but then I got yelled at.

You're not gonna last here if you recur to stereotypes, man.

Not gonna last? Does that mean they ban people for crappy comments? This must not be a true goth establishment then...

Ok, before saying anything, that's a stupid logic.
But no, they won't ban you for pretty much anything. There's administrators but not moderators. The site is pretty much self-moderated.
But if you just recur to stereotypes and ignorant comments, well, there wouldn't be much that you and goths have in common, so it would be a lonely place.

Lol, most of you are not goths. Its kind of like bikers. There's only a few bikers in gangs and they are called 1 percenters. So basically 1% of the people here are true goths. The ones that are true goths worship satan and do voodoo. 99% of the people are just metal.

First, I was always under the impression the t-shirt that read, "Ain't nothing but a goth thing" or what ever it said along those lines was his creation.
I had also heard that he claimed If I Was Your Vampire was going to replace Bela Lugosi's Dead as the new goth anthem.
I'm not sure if that's him claiming to be goth or not in your opinion, but I certainly see it as such.
It should be noted though that I also neither read or have seen for myself that either of these are his, this is second hand information.

I was always under the impression a lot of his music was meant to be as a joke. If not a joke at least not taken as seriously as it is.

although he DOES need a good charring.... anyone up for it?
And dude, you can't tell who's goth and who's not if you don't know the definition yourself.

If Pyre were still here she would go off the emo thing and post a two page history lesson on Emotive Punk.
