You might want to research the history of Christianity. Start with Zoroastrianism, which is at the root of Christianity, which started somewhere in the middle east. (forgive my vagueness, but I'm not exactly sure of the date, place, etc.) Zoroastrianism is one of the earliest (if not THE earliest) dualistic religions, which emphasizes good (GOD) and evil (DEVIL). Learning how something started, and the fact that there was a time when it didn't exist, and a time when it was new, puts things in a new perspective.
Right now I am interested in Pre-Christian religions, especially Celtic and Pagan spirituality. It's interesting that all of our Christian holidays are really just disguised Pagan holidays. Christmas= Winter Solstice, Easter= various spring fertility rituals, Halloween= Samhain. ( I know this is obvious to some, but I'm always surprised to find out how little so many people know!)

You should think about what you're doing, how it makes you feel, and what healthier alternatives could be.

Keep in mind that some people are just masochistic. I, myself, like shallow cuts once in a while, and needles. The needles for shots (hypodermic?) feel good too. I suppose it's just how the brain works, and is purely mental.

Definately. If its a way of dealing with problems, then those problems should be fixed, not bled out.

I think everyone who is or will break it to their parents, needs to think that, either way, goth or not, their parents or friends or whomever will always still love you.Being goth shouldn't have anything to do with how someone feels for one another.

Well, to get my parents to shut up about it, I showed them "Goth with a SledgeHammer" And now they understand the sub-culture and actually are completely okay with it.

It's not so much that they're "disguised" because we stole them (which I don't think you were implying, but a lot of people do), so much as they were good times to celebrate because early Christians looked a lot less suspicious if they could celebrate their own holidays on the same days as the ancient Romans. They didn't get thrown to the lions that way.

Yes! I was just talking to someone about that very thing the other day! St. Brigid was originally a Celtic fertility goddess named Brig or Brid (where the word "bride" comes from, I believe), who was 'assimilated' into Christianity when the Anglos conquered the Celts, who still worship her, but as "St. Brigid," a catholic patron saint of fertility, marriage, and childbirth. Now, I don't have any problems with (most) modern Christians, and I'm not religious myself, but it can't be denied that the Christians, once they gained as much power as the Romans, became just like their former oppressor. They conquered native people and forced 'assimilation' through cultural genocidal practices such as outlawing native languages, and slowly phasing out the celebration of Pagan or Native holdiays by celebrating the Christian holidays on the same days, even including some of the elements of the old celebrations. Christians became the majority, and native cultures began their slow death, their languages, rituals, and gods reduced to 'quaint' and offensive charicatures of their former glory. The leprechaun is such an example of this: he was once Lugh Lamhfada, a male deity of the same caliber as Odin, the Norse All-Father, now reduced to a parody of himself and a symbol of the defeated old religion, which NOW has to hide in symbols and secret rituals disguised as Christian holidays, hiding from the Church- the new Oppressor.

I reccomend rubber bracelets.Lots of them. Or, a wristband if they'll let you wear cotton in the pool.

You should stop cutting on your arms. Most people who do it use their legs and they don't show anyone. Also, if you are in any way ashamed of it and don't want people to see, you should stop. If you can't stop, you seriously need to think about why. I don't think concealer will hide cuts, except for the kind they use on corpses.

Well, I was wondering about Love_The_Heartless, because he/she is cutting, and wants to know how to conceal it. I have read some things about cutting in my counseling/ psychology classes, but I don't know if they're true. Some people say that cutters do it because they can't feel their bodies, in a way. They need to be reminded that they are physical beings.

That makes sense. A friend of mine used to cut herself, and I asked her why she couldn't just get tattoos or piercings if she liked pain. I realize it's not the same, because the cutting is self-inflicted, so it's not the pain....it's the act of hurting oneself? From my understanding, when one is cutting, it doesn't hurt. So liking pain and cutting yourself are totally unrelated.

Just bunk off PE. Even if you get caught, you'll just get a detention and maybe be put on report for a week if you're in trouble for other stuff too. It'll still be better than the fall-out if your teachers see the cuts.

Exactly ^^. Anyone can google "self-injury" and learn about it that way. Why do YOU do it? I've written term papers about it, but I still don't REALLY know why anyone does it. If you are like most people who cut themselves, you have a specific reason for doing it, and nothing else in your life right now can replace it.

Love_the_Heartless: Look,I've been reading over this thread and it's starting to really annoy me. First you can't choose what religion to believe in,next you're talking about cutting yourself up. Reading this angst is enough to make me want to become horrible depressed.
If you believe your life is actually this bad,why don't you get some professional help? You obviously have problems going on in your life, that need to be taken care of.
And everyone has had(Or still have) problems...it's a natural part of growing up.
And trying to be more "Gothic" isn't going to help you.
