It takes a lot of help too. I would know. Anyone there to support me really helped. Knowing there were people who cared and wanted to see me stop was a lot of help to stop. I mean with ever passing day it's still a struggle, relapse happens, but it's worth it not to. It hurts the people around you.

Thebloodflowers, your opinion matters as much as anyone else's, but it seems like you're trying to make every post sound like some sort of poem. Forgive me if I'm wrong. Just say whatever you're gonna say, there's no need to jazz it up.

I had cut before cause I thought, "Oh no one cares, life sucks." Then i saw the impact it caused on my friends and family. My mom and step-dad had me going to counseling(pointless but whatever) and several of my friends got so messed up over it that they started cutting as well. I havn't cut in over 6 months but its still an addiction I have to deal with almost daily. Oh well, thats just my say on this

I'm still not sure why cutting was ever labelled as a goth/emo thing to do. In my experience, it's not, and just as many people outside of the gothic culture cut as inside it cut. I respect the opinions given on here, but I must beg to disagree. Every case is not an addiction, nor a suicide method, nor simply a weakness.
I am an ex-cutter. I was cutting before I ever came in contact with the goth culture. (I led a very sheltered childhood. I didn't know that there were other people who thought the way I thought and saw the beauty the beauty I saw in things others thought gross or disturbing until I was about 15)
I would cut because I have an extremely high physical pain tolerance and a very low emotional tolerance. I used cutting to transfer my emotional pain into physical pain, something I could deal with.
My only use for cutting now would be my masochism, which is a bit harder to say "I don't need or want that" to. Masochism, is, however, slightly off topic. Though if anyone wants to discuss it I'm open. However, I don't, because it makes the people who care about me concerned and causes them pain.

Uh, well I have just very painfully come upon an other way of self harm.
I was very unhappy with the way a day went by so in the evening I simply decided that I was not in the mood to end the day and so I just didn't go to sleep. I drew and wrote the whole night long...and consumed outrageous amounts of coffee and cigarettes.
The next day, I was still depressed and I repeated the routine. And the next night.
Today I am hardly able to control my limbs and my hands are shaking slightly. But in the morning I felt as if I was doing the right thing...I was sure that this would fix me.
I just found it very interesting how many different ways there are of falling so fuckin deeeeeeeeep down. It is a rather well known symptome for depression to NOT get out of bed for days (one thing that I have not yet had to live through) but not GETTING into bed for days....that's a new variation.
How weak humans are...or at least I.

I have no tolerance for pain, and have never self harmed no matter how bad things have become. It's not a trait I'd ever want to see in my friends, either, and I've spent more than one afternoon carefully trying to coax someone out of another round of it.
Or, in the case of those who are older and should definitely know better (36 with two kids? Should know better), scolding them for being silly. 'But I was bored!' shouldn't be a reason.
While I don't physically self-harm, I sometimes wonder if I'm accidentally damaging myself. Refusing to sleep, some nights, even though I know I have to, or forgetting to eat for a couple of days.

Yup, that's more or less what I was talking about.

Thing is, it's never deliberate. I'm always careful about myself- when I feel my head starting to swim, I stop drinking. When I'm in company I'd rather not be, I get away. I collect bladed weaponry and keep the stuff blunt for display only!
So I end up with all kinds of unusual accidental things. 4am computer sprees are not for the wise.

well, for me it's probably deliberate, but not in the moment I do it.
I am also the type that is careful about oneself. But there are moments in the dark of night under the howling stars and at full moon when........I stop thinking.

Can't say I'm guilty of that.
I find distractions are excellent, though. When feeling as if perhaps I may be tempted to indulge in foolishness of a physically destructive nature, I force myself to do something. Play minesweeper. Catalogue my music. Play more minesweeper. Polish my bladed weapons. Read a book.
It helps, mostly. I've never hurt myself.

I self harm and trust me the whole calling people who do it Goth is hurtful to me as well. I'm not a Goth, and I don't like being categorized as such. I don’t where cloths that make me stand out, or have dark eyeliner to say something about myself to the rest of the world. Self harm is not a weakness, it's the bodies way to survive something that if not done would cause death. I use it as a way to not show emotion, and to tolerate the things that I have gone through without affect others. The thing I want least of all is hurt someone else. No one in real life knows when I do it, and it isn’t for attention, I in fact hid it quite well, only after 8 years of it did I tell the only person in real life who knows I harm myself, because I needed to be honest with her (my mom). I am part of a message board that works together to be there for each other and even in your lowest points in life we still reach out to help people that we really don’t know. I could be a total bitch to everyone, smoke, drink, do drugs, have loads of unsafe sex, over eat to the point of obesity, or do countless other activates that the majority of the population does to cope with life; I cope by cutting/scratching at my skin. So instead of affecting everyone else with my problems in life I only affect myself. Maybe if the people posting here didn’t talk about the self harmers that they only saw on TV, you’d understand what it is actually about. Self harmers tent to be people who are caring to the point of a fault, which the rest of the world could do with an ounce of the caring that a self harmer has. So before calling us all names, and saying that we “need help” think of the ways you self harm, and then see if you cast the first stone.

.....right. And so cutting yourself up only hurts yourself and no one else? Open your eyes babydoll and take a better look.
Also, I probably understand this type of 'coping' more than you do.

I'll second the motion. You do need help. I'm not going to call you any names or ridicule you, because of course, I'm not perfect either. But seriously. That is one hefty self-rationalization.
Self-harm is also substance abuse, overeating, etc.
Cutting is not a superior affliction. There is no such thing as a superior affliction. Self-destruction is self-destruction no matter how you do it.

Everyone self harms, some of us hide it better, and we all need help.
Deal.

Therapy is meant to help people. Not scare them.

My self harm is connected to PTSD, which gets worse if you get "help" the best thing to do is to let the injury heal itself. If help is forsed on people it just makes it worse. Also no one around me even knows when I do it, how can they get hurt when they never see it? FYI I've been harming for 9 years, trust me when I say I understand what it is, you don't do it for 9 years and not gat a clue.
