Back when I was a "poseur" I used to deny every "Are you goth" that came my way. Sorta pathetic really....

I love 7 Shades of Black. I want the kitty.
Anyways, I think the main problem people have with the whole goth thing is the mansonites and even the 'true' goths that shout to everyone and anyone that they are GOTH! And even more, they're the gothiest GOTH around.

Yes, why yes it is.
But, on another note, when people around my school ask if I'm goth, I say yes. It takes too long and it's a wasted effort to try explaining that I'm really more in a baby-bat stage, but I have gotten into the music, so yes, you could say I'm goth.

I actually tried the entire explanation of it once, but at the end, I was out of breath, and the person just looked confused.

Yeah, confused outsiders are a bit of a pain. But what can we do?

Well, one can't expect to educate the entire world on the trivials of the goth subculture. It would get tiring and people wouldn't listen. And no matter what you're in, there will always be ignorance. You can't expect everyone to know everything.

I know... believe me, I've tried. I'm just so sick of people calling goth "racist" and stuff. But I learned not to waist so much energy on those idiots.

I think she meant ignorance as lack of knowledge something we are all guilty of.

its stupid to go shouting "HEY GUESS WHAT IM GOTH" is incredably irritating. if people ask say yes but dont go announcing it to the world for no reason. looking at you should be enough.

Since we are on the whole topic of gothyness, when exactly are you supposedly out of your babybat stage? I was listening to deathrock since 6th grade after I was first introduced to punk by my older cousin, industrial around late/mid 7th grade, and here I am now 11th grade. So what, that was... 4/5 years?

Basically, once you can talk about goth bands without embarassing yourself or appearing as a total noob, you're no longer a babybat.

I think its deeper then that. Yeah music is a big part of it but you can be goth without loving the goth genre in music. Least that was my impression otherwise alot of victorian and romantics are so screwed ;p. Unless you dont like sisters of mercy then you deserve to be slapped but other then that. You should still know about the history though so i guess learning what bands are what is part of it.

By that logic, I'm still a baby bat, lolz.
Sure, music is a very important part of the sub culture. Still, there's fashion, the art, poetry. You should also know the history, not all of it, but many of the key facts. I'll stop here, because I'm sure most of these points have been brought up many a times.
