I have been studying and reading about Paganism (Wiccan is a branch of paganism) for about four years. (I'm 15 now aswell) and I'd call myself a non-practicing Paganist. = I believe in paganism and Gaia but I do not practice the hollydays or diffrent spells etc, eventhough I do meditate reguarly.
Paganism is one of the oldest religions on earth together with hinduism and budhism. AKA how can you belive in god and paganism (or wicca) at the same time when Paganism was atleast ten thousand years older than christianity? Christianity took alot of things from Paganism. etc, the pentacle (five pointed star which represent the five elements) and turned it around to make it the symbol of satan. just as satan was "stolen" from the greek god Pan. There are several branches of paganism that believe in several gods. But most (including me) believe in Gaia which is the greek worth for earth and is more an essence than a actual thinking being. A power which bind every being on earth together (this includes stones, animals, water, grass, trees,) everything is living and must be respected.
Though when many people wish to pray to Gaia and ask favours / help / protection from her (Gaia is normally seen as a female eventhough as a essence it doesnt have a gender) they divide her into the godess and god since its easier to picture such. Asking help from the god for masculine traits and virsa versa with the godess.

Now if you would just search for "Wicca" on the internet the first thing that would come up is http://www.wicca.com/ where you can find hours upon hours of reading material. They also got a newsletter that you can subscribe to, and a internet shop where you can buy several ingredients and quality books.

Hope it somewhat helped, say if you have any questions and I will try to answer them.
Blessed be.
I'll try to put this simply, so your 15 year old "expert" mind can wrap around my point.

I never stated I was expert at all and I never would. Long from, but I do know -some- stuff. Also in what way is it a scam? It isnt like people are earning money out of it. If thats your opinion then thats fair, but you have to understand other people have their own opinions aswell.

If their opinions disagree with the fact that a religion invented in the 1930's(or was it 40's?) in order to sell books, is indeed bullshit and a scam, then their opinions are wrong.

You may know a lot about what Wicca says about itself, but do you have any idea about its REAL origins?

And actually, there's about 20 shops in Chicago that sell harmful energy protection crystals, divining herbs and shit like that, so yea, people are making money off the bullshit...

There's this page and a half or so in American Gods that I'd just LOVE to post here..
All of my books are already packed and in the car though. Maybe next week.

I believe in letting people form their own oppinions and believe what they will.
This point of view has resulted in me often being flamed and called nasty things. But I believe that it is how things should be.

Is it the part where they are in the cafe and they ask the waitress about Easter?

I believe in letting people form their own opinions too, actually. But I also believe in saving them from their own stupidity.

How can you claim another person's oppinion to be stupidity when you say you WANT them to form their own oppinions? If you ask me, those two points of view counteract each other, thereby meaning nothing.

No problem.

Quote:
"Remember," she [Easter] said to Wednesday, as they walked, "I'm rich. I'm doing just peachy. Why should I help you?"

"You're one of us," he said. "You're as forgotten and as unloved and unremembered as any of us. Its pretty clear whose side you should be on."

They reached a sidewalk coffehouse, went inside, sat down. There was only one waitress, who wore her eyebrow ring as a mark of caste, and a woman making coffee behind the counter. The waitress advanced upon them, smiling automatically, sat them down, took their orders.

Easter put her slim hand on the back of Wednesday's square gray hand. "I'm telling you," she said, "I'm doing fine. On my festival days they still feast on eggs and rabbits, on candy and on flesh, to represent rebirth and copulation. They wear flowers in their bonnets and they give each other flowers. They do it in my name. More and more of them every year. In my name, old wolf."

"And you wax fat and affluent on their worship and their love?" he said, dryly.

"Don't be an asshole." Suddenly she sounded very tired. She sipped her mochaccino.

"Serious question, m'dear. Certainly I would agree that millions upon millions of them give each other tokens in your name, and that they still practice all the rites of your festival, even down to hunting for hidden eggs. But how many of them know who you are? Eh? Excuse me, miss?" This to their waitress.

She said, "You need another expresso?"

"No, my dear. I was just wondering if you could solve a little argument we were having over here. My friend and I were disagreeing over what the word "Easter" means. Would you happen to know?"

The girl stared at him as if green toads had begun to push their way between his lips. Then she said "I don't know about any of that Christian stuff. I'm a pagan."

The woman behind the counter said, "I think its like Latin or something for "Christ has risen", maybe."

"Really?" said Wednesday.

"Yeah, sure," said the woman. "Easter. Just like the sun rises in the east, you know."

"The risen son. Of course- a most logical supposition." The woman smiled and returned to her coffee grinder. Wednesday looked up at their waitress. "I think I shall have another expresso, if you do not mind. And tell me, as a pagan, who do you worship?"

"Worship?"

"Thats right. I imagine you must have a pretty wide open field. So to whom do you set up your household altar? To whom do you bow down? To whom do you pray at dawn and at dusk?"

Her lips described several shapes without saying anything. before she said, "The female principle. Its an empowerment thing. You know?"

"Indeed. And this female principle of yours. Does she have a name?"

"She's the goddess within us all," said the girl with the eyebrow ring, color rising to her cheek. "She doesn't need a name."

"Ah, said Wednesday, with a wide monkey grin, "so do you have mighty bacchanals in her honor? Do you drink blood wine under the full moon while scarlet candles burn in silver candleholders? Do you step naked into the seafoam, chanting ecstatically to your nameless goddess while the waves lick your legs, lapping your thighs like the tongues of a thousand leopards?"

"You're making fun of me," she said "We don't do any of the stuff you were saying."

Ha, thanks.

Now, in all fairness, I do consider myself pagan. But I'm not a fluffy-facepalm Wiccan.

At last...someone else who has read that book!!
I love Neil Gaiman but even if that novel were not by him i would still believe it has a right to be nominated as one of the best pieces of modern literature.
I'd love to know which quote you're referring to.

Lots of people seem to be getting hot under the collar debating the credentials of Wicca.
Perhaps it might be more fruitful to consider WHY people believe in things rather than arguing the merits or failings of WHAT they believe in?

After all you can always honour us with a thread about it or
Why not expressing your view here on what you judge more fruitful.

With respect, I did. I suggested that it would be more fruitful to discuss WHY people believe things rather than pointlessly arguing and poo-pooing WHAT they believe.
