"the only way to define Emo is to use Occam's Razor (no pun intended)"

HA! Brilliant.

I thought Emo was a furry red muppet that vibrated.

Oh, wait, that's Elmo.

I have an ex-bf who used to cut himself, and for me that was; or at least he used to claim so. I can give you his email if you'd like mini-evil.

btw he's emo now ;p

On another note, it's nice to see so many individual opinions on cutting but i think the person you're flaming is kind of... gone. Lol.

Yes... We should rename this thread: "The cutting megathread!"

(On a side note, I pity those who really cut themselves, and not for attention. It can actually help a lot, but my advice is this: Go and work out! I'm serious, it does the same thing - helps you not to think. And it's healthy too!)

High Five Cyntox!!!!

I was a closet cutter until I discovered dance and weightlifting, long long ago in a galaxy far, far away. I was like, OC, yo. Original Cutter. I have cred and stuff.

Word.

But seriously, you are right about working out- with the energy directed at something constructive it proves to be a better outlet. Nothing to hide, no long sleeves, and no explanations.

Just shin splints.

Do not get me wrong, the baggage is still there when you work out and the likes, but that baggage is the disease and should be discussed and helped with a professional. Cutting is just a symptom.

Actualy from what I have read on the subject the actual emo subculture is dead. Assimilated by the mainstream. The emo you see these days is poseur emo. I feel sad for the true emos who lost their subculture to the mainstream. I just wonder is the mainstream emo a dilluted version of emo or a concentrated version of emo?

Anna Nicole Smith would never jog anywhere.

Thing the Second ~ cutting yourself is not cool. Your mother is right. Stop doing it, it makes all of the people who know you point and laugh at you behind your back. If you keep doing it they won't even wait until you have turned your back, they will just laugh in your face. And you will deserve it because you are doing stupid things to your body.

Thing the Third ~ even more stupid than cutting yourself is cutting yourself for attention. Do not try to tell me that you weren't doing it for attention, because if you weren't then your keyboard wouldn't be smeared with blood and my mind wouldn't be polluted with your presence right now. Do us a favour - put a band-aid on that thing, get away from your computer and go outside and play in your treehouse. Before I have to come over there and kick your arse.
You're funny. =}

I used to cut, to punish myself for mistakes. Now I have scars. Looking back, it's not a huge deal or something I really regret, but I decided to stop. Now if I think I made a mistake, I just make sure not to do it again.

It creates an instant adrenaline rush which helps some people deal with overwhelming feelings they feel they cannot otherwise control. In the past, I have done it. I am not proud of it, and I do not recommend it to anyone. In fact, if it even crosses your mind as someone you might want to do, I would suggest you seek professional help without delay. For me, I had feelings of self-hatred. I wanted to die, but I couldn't bring myself to commit suicide because of intense fear and guilt. So I sliced away and immediately felt a little better, less overwhelmed at least. I was able to "bleed out my emotions", have a good cry, and fall asleep instead afterwards instead of simply feeling like shit all night long. It's not the brightest way of coping, but it works - to an extent, that is until you feel worse for doing it. That happened to me the moment a family found out about it and ordered me to go to the E.R.

If this person is legit and looking for an online support group, I would suggest he or she consider Bodies Under Siege (http://buslist.org/phpBB/). However, if anyone finds himself drawn to this behavior because he thinks it will make him seem cool and deep, think again. It is definitely not cool, and being well read and contemplative is "deep"; slashing yourself is not. Also keep in mind the stigma goes further than the scars. There are many misconceptions about the people who cut and why they cut. Most people do not understand it.

Of course what anyone does is ultimately up to the individual and personal experiences may vary. That is just how I see it, something to think about.

I like some emo music, but I can't stand today's emo kids. I hope the ones that cut cut a little deeper and rid us of themselves. Everybody's got problems and there will be some people who understand, but most around you won't. That's just life.

Given today's childrens' tendency to over dramatize much of which they clearly know nothing, I wouldn't be too suprised if modern emo is a dilluted version of the original.

Pretty much every teen who dresses "darkly" has a psychaetrist, where I live anyways. Why do you think that is? I think we all know.

I couldn't agree with you more! I was a cutter for 6 yrs and when I finally decided to help myself and do something about it I found Karate!! Now when I'm stuck in a situation instead of grabing my razor, I grab my sparing gear LOL!

I wish kids these days wouldn't glamorize cutting like it's soo cool... it truly does make you sad about those who have a real problem and want help...

Shut the fuck up. We don't tolerate bigotry here. "Emos" are people too. I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of them do cut themselves, considering how much persecution they have to endure every day by ignorant shits like you.

I had a psychiatrist because I needed help. I think we just go through more shit than most people. I'm seeing my psychiatrist for the last time this coming Monday, so yay for me! *Eye twitch*

Drac, I love you. You have some innovative thinking.

I wish I could surround myself with people that were that much more understanding.

Okay, the whole tickle me emo thing... wow. I nearly vomited.

I used to burn myself. Well, apply very very hot heat to myself. I rarely ever scared, but the pain was intense enough to make me forget my troubles for a moment. Being a military member is too hard on me.

My only problem is, I have an odd fetish for high heat applications. So the whole self hurting was also self pleasing.
