Out Cold (2001)
If you haven't seen it, definately rent it, get a few friends together, and have lots of laughs. That movie is hilarious.

One bad movie followed by another…meh. OK, so Kong’s biggest problem was being too damn long, and I got the feeling the only reason Jack Black’s character wanted to film the big brute was because he fell in love with them Kong nutts, but that aside; it was the best acting/looking Kong, evah.
Now on to Underworlds, Evolution.
I can akin this sequel to getting the highlights of Islam from an ADD suffering, hard right winger Christianity freak hooked on huffing paint and slugging down shots of Drano…you just know he’s going to miss some of the finer points.
The movie is rife with story inconsistencies, timeline confusion, character motivation confusion, cause and effect ignorance, and was an overall crap fest.
Though, there was one point in the film where Kate Beckinsale got naked…and Scott Speedman tried to insert his thigh into her Death Dealer…and the half-empty bag of popcorn on mah lap suddenly transformed into a jumbo bucket—with the kernels spilling out of the sides and everything.
And of course, wouldn't you know, sticking with the overall theme of the movie, there was no true reason for the sex scene, no reason for sinewy flesh to be intertwined, no real reason for there to be fucking on the screen...and those of you who’ve seen your fare share of pornographic masterpieces know where I’m going with this...
Taken from rough draft script, U/Evolution
Fade in.
Kate, flesh wound on hand pushes Scott away, says: “There’s no need, I recuperate fast.”
Scott, looks slyly at Kate, winks, “I recuperate fast too.”
Que Bawmchickawawahm music.
Fade out.
The high points? Good action, good creature effects (this series still has the best morphing scenes evah) Kate naked, lots of death and mayhem, buckets of blood.
That is all.

Yeah, she is quite yummy, Tek. Just...keep your eye trained on the upper right portion of the screen during the get-down, and you'll be rewared with nipplege!

Wolfmoon, words cannot describe the flow of emotion I felt when I read that. It could have, however been the Dr.Pepper that squirted out of my nose.

Oh, yeah. On to the topic. I saw Brokeback Mountain at the Rialto (which does a lovely live version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show) tonight, and I am man (or woman, or whatever) enough to say that it made me cry. Profusely.
Plus, two major hotties getting it on in a movie? Just tell me where and when and I'll bring the hot wax. Or handcuffs. Or whatever.

Red Eye
Not impressed. The film sorta starts out like it has it's act together, but then after about 15 minutes, whatever felt geniune about it dissolves into familiarity. Familiarity soon dissolves into implausibility. At that point I sorta just opened up the ol' skull cap and removed my brain so I could attempt to enjoy the rest of the film. This may have been new in some aspects for Wes Craven, but as a member of the audience, it sure felt like an echo of many other "airplane suspense" movies. Had most of the same plot points as most others (I'd be amazed if an airplane movie actually didn't involve the bathroom for once as a means for escape or help).
At the very least though, there is some attempt to explain certain things, like why it's taking more than five minutes for the police to arrive at a crime scene in an upper middle class neighborhood. But for the most part, every other logical question is clumsily tripped over and forgotten in the wake of, "What's next?" Like why a character that committed a multitude of federal and state crimes isn't brought in for questioning after the authorities arrive, but instead, allowed to travel to the site of an ongoing federal investigation that she wasn't at previously and just walk around freely.
It's a "OK" movie. Forgettable though. Flight Plan held much more of my interest.

The latter half of Super Troopers, and the sequel to Underworld. I quite liked the sequel to Underworld.

a few recent ones....
"Abducted By Daleks"-3 words "oh" "my" "GOD!!!". Why those three words? Try these three on for size- "Doctor" "Who" "Porn" (though the doctor never makes an appearance, the Daleks sure do). Basically three girls are driving through a forest and end up kidnapped and molested by the Daleks. Like all great British exploitation from the 70's, this one's got crappy camera work, crappy editing, and hot chicks with bad dentistry running around naked and screaming. However.....fucking Daleks!!! My mind is buldging "OUCH"! However, I'm sure Al and EPS are gonna run out for it soon.
"Bareback"....err....."Brokeback Mountain"-(actually, saw it again, so this now 4 times) John Waynes personal life aside, movies about cowboys were always a bit coy about the most obvious of elements in Westerns-latent homoeroticism (and really, what could be queerer than a cowboy? Cops and soldiers aside?).
Now, a story about fag cowboys could very easilly devolve into any of these horrible descriptions-"queer cinema", "melodrama", "post-modern western". However, the film deftly stays above any kind of descriptive one could throw out, and instead becomes....well, like nothing that came before it.
What keeps this film on the tightrope that it walks is the perfection of the collaboration. From Ang Lee's dead-perfect direction, to the (justly) lauded performances of Heath Ledger and Jake Gillenhall as the star-crossed lovers, to Rodrigo Pieto's poetic cinematography (never has nature looked so hypnotically menacing and embracing at the same time), to the story by Ann Proulx and the screen adaption by Larry (fucking "Lonesome Dove"!!!!) McMurtry, a balance is acheived that keeps the film on track and moving foreward rather than imploding on its own talents.
Now, looking over the credits one would expect some well-meaning but boring tripe. Let me assure you that no, this is the best love story ever put on screen by an american (sorry, but Wong Kar Wei makes the best love stories ever). Lee and company pull no punches, either emotionally or logically, and what we have is the perfect realisation of all that queer cinema has promised, yet never delivered-a truly transcendent love story that doesn't require any kind of queer identity to get. All this, and hot fucking from the stars, too (oh yes, Lee REALLY pulled no punches).
"Munich"-I want to start this off by talking about the greatness of Steven Soderbergh, who has gone from indie maverick to the hippest director in America who's somehow able to get big name stars to act in his films. Soderbergh's astute love of cinema, and his willingness to play (and not take "film-making" too seriously) has given us viewers a string of films that are challenging, fun, and ultimately cinemtic ("Sex, Lies, And Videotape", "Schizopolis", "The Limey", "Traffic", "Out Of Sight", "Erin Brokovich", the "Ocean's 11" remake).
Wait, didn't Steven Spielberg direct this?.
Spielbergh, the former king of popcorn cinema, has always had an unease with his "fun film-maker" reputation, and had always longed for what his buddy Martin Scorcese had-critical acclaim (while Scorcese had always wanted to have the shitloads of money Spielberg had). With "Color Purple", it looked like Spielberg was finally going to go for it. And whilst over the years he's known which side his bread was buttered, he had always returned to "mature" stories.
The problem was that at heart he isn't a "mature" storyteller. He's a guy who's at his best telling you tall tales and adventure stories, not stories with deep emotional contexts.
"Munich", his most mature work to date, also happens to be the least heartfelt. From it's "violence begets violence" message to its action scenes to the cardboard thin characterisations, one would think that this was perfect for Spielberg.
However, he wanted it to be more than a popcorn flick, so one watches it and keeps thinking about how it resembles other films....."The Limey"...."Traffic"....holy fuck, Spielberg, in order to make his most mature film, has subverted his own personality and openly become a follower of Soderberg.
Now, being a follower of Soderbergh isn't neccesarily a bad thing (it's worked out well for Clooney's two films), but let's face it, this is Spielberg. Say what you want about the childishness of his films, the man knows (or at least knew) how to make movies. "Jaws", "Close Encounters", "Indiana Jones", and (dare I say it? I dare) "E.T.". These are the works he'll be most cherished for ("Schindler's List" as well, but that's a film that succeeds DESPITE Spielbergs attempts). Hopefully, he'll remember that as well.

*DR. LECTER
Buffalo Bill's real name is William Rubin. I met him just once. He was referred to me in April or May, 1980, by my patient Benjamin Raspail. They were lovers, but Raspail had become very frightened. Apparently Rubin had murdered a transient, and – done things with the skin. He thought if I could cure Billy, then Billy'd be safe from the police, and he's be safe from Billy... Obviously, he was wrong.*
I couldn't discuss this early because, I really couldn't remember. So, we now know that Lecter did have direct contact with Bill, albeit brief, but the implication is there that once was all Dr. Lecter needed to unleash Bill upon an unsuspecting world. His boyfriend brought him to Lecter to make him better, but Bill came away worse, which goes to exemplify the point of Lecter's sadism.
But you are right, and I am wrong. Lecter didn't create him as much as enable him. Tuned him all the way up, so to speak.

Do you think if you saved Catherine, you could make them stop...? Do you think, if Catherine lives, you won't wake up in the dark, ever again, to the screaming of the lambs? Do you...?

The silence of the lambs, then, is as the namesake implies, and silence is approval. Silence condones the act? If so, then isn't she already that which she feared? Isn't she the monster, not leading the lambs, but allowing the slaughter to take place, and, all these years later...isn’t she still trying to save just one lowly lamb?
