And yes, they have a rediculously big 'send' button.

No, that's MSN Messenger for mac.  iChat I actually use from time to time (no big button there), but I prefer forums. Gives one time to think through the answers.

Possibly the most advanced around at the moment? Though I'm not sure what it is. I have Windows Live Messenger & that's good enough for me. But if you are just interested in chatting, rather than having pictures up, or personal messages get Windows Messnger.

If you got more than MSN, say like ICQ, Yahoo etc, then Pidgin for Windows is quite nice... one program to chat with everyone regardless what they use.

Don't worry about it. It took me a while to learn how to use MSN. I remember typing something in an MSN conversation, but then not being able to see it for some reason.I kept typing to my friend 'I can't see what you're saying!!! Help me!'.
Turned out all I needed to do was scroll down on something.

Never heard of it until now, but that thing is NEAT! It's even got IRC support!! *downloads, uninstalls mIRC, Yahoo!, AIM and MSN*

For Mac, use Adium. It is a crapload of chat proggies in one. And it's free. Did I mention it was free?
