I know that they exist.

That doesn't mean they're Metal.

I'll just let other people judge whether or not this song's metal, then.
And here are a few more:

Has anyone mentioned diamonds yet? Diamonds are not metal. They are rocks.

Dominance and Submission is Hard Rock.
Veteran of the Psychic Wars is Progressive Rock.
Mistress of the Salmon Salt is Progressive Rock.
Stairway to the Stars is Hard Rock/Progressive Rock/Rock.
The Siege and Investiture of Baron von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria is Metal/Hard Rock and there are other BOC songs that could be called Metal at a stretch, but a handful of Metal-ish songs out of a massive discography doesn't make them a Metal band.

Those songs are metal. Deny it all you like. BOC is metal. Wiki agrees with me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Oyster_Cult
Granted, they aren't EXCLUSIVELY metal, but neither were Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin.

What the fuck? I reckon Metallica and Maiden suck compared to most metal bands. Sure they were great and pioneers in metal. So?
You're an idiot who knows nothing of metal if you think Maiden and Metallica suck. Do you know anything about metal?

Edit: And What is your Idea of good metal, oh superior musical interests lord?

Damn. I forgot that to like metal in the slightest I had to like Maiden and Metallica! What is my idea of good metal? Whatever I find pleasing to my ears. Some Deicide is good, Amon Amarth aren't that bad. Lamb of God are pretty awesome. Behemoth are the shizz. Sabbath are pretty good.
I don't listen to metal as much as I used to. It's now just a mix of whatever I feel like listening to. Be it shitty nu-metal stuff like Slipknot or Death Metal or Hardcore or Deathrock or Punk. I listen to what I feel like at the time. So don't expect me to start rattling of a million bands that are metal but what you listed seemed to be completely crap.

This is because neither Deep Purple nor Led Zeppelin have ever been classed as Metal.

It's true:

They're both Hard Rock, progessing towards heavy metal.

I notice more and more Metallica and Maiden fans are teenagers who think listening to 80's origin heavy metal bands like them makes you immediately a metal fanatic. If you want to listen to heavy metal you have to have more knowledge than the bands MTV showed you.

I listened to Metallica and Maiden in high school. There are a hundreds of better metal bands than them these days.

As for early metal origins. Has anyone mentioned King Crimson?
