I agree with you on most parts, but I do not know if I am emo myself. I have the typical "emo" haircut but I dress normally. And I am also shifting more into the gothic culture.

A few of my friends have accused me of being emo at times. One of my buddies even calls me "gothmo" now. *shrugs* oh well.

Emo is like any other label. In my opinion, noone should be able to apply it but you.

You are the one who knows you best. Why would you let others judge you just by your appearance or, in this case, what you seem to be by what you listen? Labels made by other individuals apart from yourself, are just obsolete.

Without self label and other labeling, society would fail. Humans automatically label. weak, strong, ugly,,, we may not realize it. Aesthetics, music and the likes are no different.

We label ourselves to seek out others of like; others label us for the same or the opposite reason. Commonality or avoidance.

It is not a cop out

you are on a goth board.

What just isn't right is to let someone else label you and to actually do what that label imposes.

You don't "let" them label you, they just do. And it should have no impact in how you live your life. You label/classify people every day and they do not alter their behavior because of this. There is nothin gthat you can do on this planet and not get slapped with a label.

So what if someone says something- why let it alter your decisions if they do not pay your bills? I get labelled all the time, like everyone else. It really does not register because I live according to my decisions, not their labels.

I could care less about what people label me. But I do have some friends who think they are emo just because the person who sits infront of them in science class said so. I do talk to them about how they shouldn't let that label change them, but they don't seem to listen to me. So what? It's their life they're screwing. Apparently, they like being labeled so, unlike me.

It's not like a litmus test, there are no definites. And you aren't X because someone says so. You are X because of your choices. If your friends are that succeptible to other people's opinions, than that is just sad.

It's pitiful. I just feel that they can be better persons outside those walls they have set for themselves.

Anyway, why did we even start with these labels?

Yeah, but I just got a CNN alert that Paris Hilton is going to jail. Let's talk more about labels.

Labels are used by all living things to be able to make a decision on what they can see, smell, hear etc...It’s a matter of survival.

I know little girls have tried to follow her slutty ways. It could be that.

If you've ever been labeled goth (which I think you might've), hasn't anyone ever asked you such things like if you cut yourself or if you liked death metal? Uck..I really do hate when people do ask me this. Rather than showing their mere ignorance, it reflects their lack of understanding towards the culture.

They don't have a full understanding, only the understanding usually of their peers and people tend to try to validate their perceptions- especially when they are insecure.

GOOD GOTH! The world is coming to an EEEEENNNNNNDDDDDD! Damn media! If it's for the attention why recognize it on freakin' national TV. The second girl the interviewed was such an air-head she didn't even know what she was saying!

I'm going to get myself a cup of black coffee and sit in the corner listening to MCR.

What I don't understand is why emos are drawn to me. Well, only on myspace. Actually... it is myspace after all.

I think they're very mistaken or something. If I have emo tendencies or if I look emo, I wouldn't know it.
