Ben, I wholeheartedly agree with you on this.
In fact, in Ireland we don't even get sex-educated in school. It has been horribly taboo for so long, that even though porn magazines, sex phonelines, lapdancing clubs and so on have slipped quietly into the mainstream of our culture (and threfore into the radar of children), nothing is being done in to educate children about anything but the biological side of things.
Children are learning that sex is "cool", like a must-have accessory, but they aren't learning about the consequences, the emotional weight it holds, the responsibilty it demands... or about it's link to love.
In fact love, seen as emotional fragility, is almost as much a taboo as sex.
Until recently, the school curriculum did not contain any kind of subject that was not maths, science, language or arts-related. My younger brother was lucky enough to have "Civics" class when he was in high-school. He learned a little bit about human rights and community values, but that's as close as it gets to being taught about how to function well as a human being...

Ben, I agree with you as well. Up here, our parents need to give us our education, and they need to do that with both Love and Sex. My mom educated me well and held nothing back. Now, I value my body and my heart and have given my love as best I could to people who I believed deserved it. Sure, shit didn't work out, as that's life, but kids nowadays are talking about getting married at ages like 13. That's not really right in my eyes, as they don't understand what that takes... and it saddens me that children at such a young age are dedicating to one person solely. What happened to Dating? What happened to going steady? Personally, at my age right now (17), I think that's an ok time to start being solely dedicated. So much in your life is changing, you're becoming an independant adult and once that happens, it's your choice.
Also, what happened to getting to know someone? I'll ask a girlfriend or a boyfriend what their problems are when I'm trying to help and they'll just shrug. LIKE WTF? So I start asking basic, basic questions. (If they are in the city, this is easier)
Favorite color, eye color, height, attitude, favorite school subject, favorite song... etc. Usually when couples in the city have problems, it's because of a lack of knowledge and lack of communication. Teens today don't understand that COMMUNICATION is key to a successful relationship... and NO it does not mean you have to see/talk to the person EVERY damn day. It means that you should actually listen and treasure the time you do spend together...
Relationships have become a fad. To say the VERY least. And that makes me mad... I love the relationship I'm in now, even though we aren't physically together, I know a lot about him, we have a good connection and have talked about any problems that have arisen.
Dammit, I'm ranting aren't I? Oh well... SEXY SEX SEX!
See? I was on topic!

I mean.. bah, you and your sick minds.
My mother answered any questions I had and still have, introduced me to the world I would eventually know. I don't mean that we did anything together (EW).
Because the catholic education system teaches us about sex (Penis into Vagina, make sure HE wears a condom, that was it) and that periods are messy. Like I didn't know that by Grade 6. Dear gods... If you have a question Sobeh, feel free to ask...

Thanks Sanctus. I'm sure that is very sound advice and I know you are giving it with my own personal well being at heart, so it is doubly appreciated. I do think it is important that younger people should be able to talk about issues that are so very important to them and not be ignored, but on reflection, I can see that a parent or professional counsellor is probably the right person for such serious concerns.
I apologize for overstepping the mark.

COME COME LITTLE CHILDREN AND HEAR NUNCLE JOSH TEACH YOU ABOUT UNDERAGE SEX!!!!
Bwaha. Ha.
Anyway, Love? I think so. I know I've felt lust and this is different.
Maybe it's not quite love, but who ever knows what love feels like? Noone can truly define a feeling. For now, the word works.

Much like sexual education should be, children should be taught love by their parents. But, also like sex, parents often are too "embarrassed" or whatever half-assed reason they have to teach it to their children. So yes, perhaps love should be a topic talked about in school.

I’m having problems with wrapping my cranium around this whole taught-love process. We’ll teach love in the curriculum now? How do we go about that when, none of us, can entirely agree on what it is? I find it somewhat ludicrous to suppose our society or any one society is better at teaching the virtues of love, than another. Of course, this being subjective to core values and cultural beliefs.
As for the teaching of offspring?
The tendency of the emotive is there, innate, is it not? Perhaps it could be and is cultivated through continual nurturing, and the strengthening of the core ideology tempered with a maturity is sometimes missing; replaced instead with the raw and unbridled scorn from an inability to process the loss of a thing—yes, that could be a taught behavior.
But then, you’re not teaching love so much as teaching how to cope with the decay of emotional attachments, which most children learn whilst in the formative state, anyway.
I call a moot.

Teaching love is ridiculous... no one could agree on an acceptable teaching curriculum... but I would say offer free counselors for a class where the children are encouraged to talk about it, but not schooled in it.

Love consolers? Hmmm, let me think…
*Mr. Roger’s Loving Neighborhood*
“Hello, children. I just love to say hello. Can you say hello? I knew you could. Could you say hello to my love friend hiding in my pants? He loves it when you talk to him in your special voice. Can you use your special voice and say to him, how much you love him? I knew you could. Would you like to touch my love friend? He’d love that, and you would too, wouldn’t you? I knew you would…”
Err, on second thought.

Well, I could say we could all argue our way into hell before we could get a consensus on what should be taught in a sex eduction class, but that doesn't stop anyone from introducing sex-ed classes to curriculums everywhere.
So what if we can't all agree what love is. I think we can all (or almost all) agree what love is not. Love is not having a man come home every night and beat you if you took too long going to the grocery store. Love is not someone querying you everytime you glance at someone of the opposite sex just because they walked into the area you're in. Love is not saying "I can't live without you."
I'm not saying it has be a class that defines what love is. I just think that there ought to be some guidance on what a mature, healthy relationship should be based on ... respect, admiration, empathy and open communication.

Benny, I agree that we should teach our children that love is none of those things.
Morrigan, I think it's odd that love is thought to be something weak over there. Love is the most powerful force there is. Well, not more powerful than a speeding bullet, but powerful enough to give one hope in the most desolate places.
Tom, if I get there first I'll warm your seat.

In general, I suppose it's not thought to be something weak. Certainly institutions of traditional "love", like the nuclear family and marriage are protected by the state. Divorce was only made legal recently and it is very difficult to get one.
But in the attitude of the populace in general is split down the middle when it comes to love. I have been taught to see it as something weak... at least I picked that up somewhere along the way... perhaps it's just my take on things... I certainly am learning a lot about love recently... I've been very vulnerable and I've seen my loved ones come to my rescue... and I've realised that I'm not a fool to confess and show love... I'm learning that giving love does not have to leave you vulnerable, and that you don't lose anything by loving, because love is an infinte resource, if you can allow it to be...

Thank you.
You are too.
